I have decided to share a life decision with you today that affects the majority of society. I am about to have a child soon and really excited about it! It took me a few years to take this big step and establish myself sufficiently in my freelance work to be able to remain self-determined with a child. Along the way, I realised how patriarchal our society and institutions still are. This makes it difficult for many parents to reconcile work and family, which is shocking as these are such central aspects of human existence. Of course, there are many ways to organise paid labour and care work, but there is no ideal way, as each is associated with privileges and/or dependencies. Studies show that parents - especially women - are stigmatised and disadvantaged. For example, there is evidence that gender-based discrimination in the workplace has a negative effect on pregnancy planning and reduces the likelihood of having children (Kim et al., 2019). It is not only a challenge to find your way through the maze of formalities and family organisation, but also to take on this new role socially and in a professional context. Employers are required to become more family-friendly, as they currently run the risk of discriminating against a large proportion of their employees. With the TrustBox, we want to offer support to all those involved; be it factual information or emotional support in the event of discrimination and how to deal with it.
