UPM Biochemicals takes the production of wood-based renewable biochemicals from idea to reality. The UPM biorefinery, which is currently under construction in Leuna, will be producing bio-based glycols, renewable functional fillers, lignin, and industrial sugars and is planned to ramp up by the end of 2024. UPM will use wood to the molecular level and produce sustainable chemicals used in products of our everyday lives. This new business will support the transformation of UPM as it will drive the transformation of our society towards a more sustainable lifestyle - true to UPM’s vision to innovate for a Future Beyond Fossils.

    At UPM, we embrace partners who share the same passion for creating a future #beyondfossils. Together with HÜBNER Group, we are developing sustainable #rubber compounds for use in public transportation products. At last week's #DKT2024 rubber conference, we presented a prototype of a folding bellow, showcasing the textile coated with UPM's RFF-filled elastomer, which is an excellent joint achievement. ✔ In the current formulation, HÜBNER Group is able to reach a 30% CO2 footprint reduction and weight reduction of 8% only with UPM BioMotion™ RFF.     Woody biomass from sustainable, 100% certified, regional beechwood forests will be used at UPM’s Leuna Biorefinery. Wood is needed to replace fossils and is a remarkable source of income and livelihoods especially in rural areas.   💚 Wood is harvested and recovered by UPM’s network of foresters and forest owners close to production. 📜 Well-managed forests, 100% covered with FSC™ and PEFC ensure traceability, maintain biodiversity and deliver social sustainability. 💶 The forests are being managed in a way that preserves biological diversity and benefits the lives of local people and workers while ensuring they sustain economic viability. #feedstockfriday #upmbiorefining #upmbiochemicals #beyondfossils

    Live from the #DKT2024 conference! We are thrilled to see such a high interest in our Renewable Functional Filler (RFF), a completely new and more sustainable material class for the #rubber and #plastic industries. Here’s a summary of what happened during the first two days: 📣 Today, we hosted a media breakfast at our booth, updating media on our latest commercial partnerships and developments from our #LeunaBiorefinery. 🎤 Full house at the scientific conference of UPM’s Barbara Gall, who hosted a technical presentation on our RFF, showcasing the sustainability advantage of our renewable alternative to conventional, CO2-intensive fillers. 🚗 One of the highlights on our booth was welcoming our friends from Nokian Tyres plc, who are exhibiting their very first concept tire that includes our RFF.     🙌🏼 It’s showtime in Nuremberg! We are at the #DKT2024, the international #rubber conference, presenting our renewable solutions for the rubber and elastomer industry from July 1-4. But we are not alone! Together with our partner Nokian Tyres plc, we are reinventing the wheel, more specifically the tire.   🏭 In our #LeunaBiorefinery, UPM is revolutionizing the valorization of #lignin. We are turning the natural raw material lignin into a refined, high quality, renewable chemical product. The secret of our wood-based Renewable Functional Filler is in its particles, which are specifically designed to provide strength and grip alongside a significantly improved sustainability performance.   🚗 Now, Nokian Tyres is introducing the first tire ever made with UPM BioMotion™ RFF. In the tire all fossil carbon black in the tire’s sidewalls is replaced by the new renewable raw material, that has the potential to replace even more of the carbon black currently used in tire production thus lowering carbon emissions in tire manufacturing.   📅 The first concept tire containing UPM BioMotion™ RFF will be exhibited at the German rubber industry conference DKT 2024 in Nürnberg, Germany, from July 1 – 4 at our booth 527 in Hall 9. Together with our partner Nokian Tyres plc we are revolutionizing the industry by introducing the first tire with our UPM BioMotion Renewable Functional Filler (RFF).   Why is this a revolution? Our lignin-based RFF contain 100% renewable carbon and have a negative carbon footprint from cradle to gate including biogenic carbon and purchasing green electricity.   🚗 Functional fillers represent approximately 30% of a tire and consist of materials such as primarily carbon black and precipitated silica.     What might look similar at a first glance, is actually quite different: #lignin & our UPM BioMotion Renewable Functional Filler (RFF). Last week, we focused on the potential of lignin and how it can be used. Today, we want to highlight how our #RFF are way more than lignin and that our #LeunaBiorefinery is in fact revolutionizing the valorization of lignin. We are turning the natural raw material lignin into refined, high quality a renewable chemical product. 🌳 Lignin is a natural product and the production of lignin uses different methods to extract it from the raw materials used. UPM BioMotion™ RFF will be produced from lignin, using a dedicated process leading to a consistent high quality and high value specialty chemical.   🌳 Some chemical structures of the lignin can also be found in our RFF. However, RFF has a defined specific surface area where particles are not softening with increasing temperature.   🌳 In contrast to lignin, the smell and VOCs of our RFF are significantly lower than of standard market lignin. When using UPM BioMotion™ RFF in rubber compounds this leads to improved mechanical properties.   The secret of our wood-based RFF is in its particles, which are specifically designed to provide strength and grip alongside a significantly improved sustainability performance.
