Here, creating a lifestyle waterfront community is at the core of our proposal. We aim to develop a future-oriented, multi-purpose community that will contribute to Nanjing’s urban development while maintaining its historical connection with the Qinhuai River waterway. Can a building communicate with its community? With this question in mind, this July, we will explore how architecture can unite and activate communities. By looking at projects where architectural elements have been thoughtfully designed to foster interaction, inclusivity, and a sense of belonging, we aim to understand the ways in which buildings can serve as active participants in the social fabric of their surroundings. To begin with, let’s look at Theatre Agora. With its kaleidoscopic and upbeat character through a multi-faceted and colorful appearance, Theatre Agora forms a welcoming gesture to the world of the performing arts. The liveliness in the choice of the building’s façade and massing encourages an innovative interaction between the architecture, the object and the public in the previous pragmatic town centre of Lelystad. One Helix is the highly sustainable new European headquarters for Neogene Therapeutics designed in collaboration with Breakthrough Properties. Currently under construction, this new headquarter will be a combination of laboratory and offices with supporting functions and amenities. The five-storey Neogene Therapeutics Headquarters will be located on the campus of the Amsterdam UMC, one of Europe's leading medical institutions. The UMC is a campus that brings together physicians, scientists, researchers, entrepreneurs and businesses with the aim to improve patient outcomes in the clinical care environment. The all-electric, net-energy-positive building is designed to maintain net zero emissions and also targets a low embodied carbon footprint, achieving an MPG score of ≤0.6. Lecture | UNStudio Associate Director and Seniro Architect Tina Kortmann is giving a lecture at the polisFORUM course lecture Holistic Urban Ecosystems tomorrow. This lecture is the second in a series of three. In its theme, the transformation to a knowledge society makes teaching and research buildings driving forces for urban futures. Campuses - whether conceived from the perspective of research or corporate organisation - form value- and knowledge-creating counterparts at the neighbourhood level. In this course, Tina Kortmann will take a look at these typologies and present the respective space-defining ideas that promote knowledge transfer and collaboration, trigger identification and charisma, and combine functionality, sustainability and aesthetics.
