United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)

Info

With 197 Parties, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) has near universal membership and is the parent treaty of the 2015 Paris Climate Change Agreement. The main aim of the Paris Agreement is to keep a global average temperature rise this century well below 2 degrees Celsius and to drive efforts to limit the temperature increase even further to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. The UNFCCC is also the parent treaty of the 1997 Kyoto Protocol. The ultimate objective of all agreements under the UNFCCC is to stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that will prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system, in a time frame which allows ecosystems to adapt naturally and enables sustainable development.

Earth is becoming hotter and more dangerous for everyone, everywhere. Together with ten specialized UN entities, UN Secretary-General António Guterres has launched a Call to Action on Extreme Heat. The paper published today calls for an urgent and concerted effort to address extreme heat in four critical areas: 👭 Caring for the vulnerable 👷♀️Protecting workers 📊 Boosting resilience of economies and societies using data and science 💚Limiting temperature rise to 1.5°C by phasing out fossil fuels and scaling up investment in renewable energy. The climate crisis is hitting every nation's security, economy, and people, with rising fury and spiraling costs. Governments need to treat bold climate plans as core business across all ministries, with G20 countries leading the way.   Solidarity is our only pathway, to the harmony and prosperity that all people need.   Read my full speech at the 8th Ministerial on Climate Action in Wuhan: https://bit.ly/4cSkT9u 📸 MoCA 8 team

From the rapid development of new technologies to competition for natural resources, the world is increasingly affected by global crises that are not just amplifying and accelerating but appear to be synchronizing with devastating consequences. This new UNEP Global Foresight Report in partnership with the International Science Council provides insights on 8 critical global shifts that exacerbate the triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. “No climate adaptation for farmers means no food.”   🌾 From soil preservation to cultivating drought-resilient crops, farmers are working in many ways to ensure food security for us all.   We spoke to Esther Penunia of the Asian Farmers' Association for Sustainable Rural Development (AFA), about the crucial role of family farmers in adapting to our changing climate. 👩🌾👨🌾💚

The climate crisis is pushing disasters to record-breaking new levels of destruction. Whether in my homeland of #Carriacou, which is today being hammered by Hurricane #Beryl; or in the communities of some of the largest economies recently crippled by heatwaves and floods; or in other parts of the world experiencing massive wildfires and brutal droughts, we can't sit by and watch while the spiraling climate wreaks havoc. The solutions are clear: We need bolder national climate plans, speeding up the transition away from fossil fuels. We need strong adaptation plans, building resilient communities. We need much bigger and better finance, the great enabler of climate action. Events like these show there are limits to adaptation and we need a fully resourced Loss and Damage fund. We need more climate action delivery, not climate despair. And we need it now.

📢 Just launched: The online reporting tools for the Paris Agreement’s Enhanced Transparency Framework (#ETF), an essential instrument in helping countries submit their new Biennial Transparency Reports, due this year. Thanks to the hard and diligent work of my colleagues here at UN Climate Change, and our partners, these new tools will enable countries to compile their data efficiently and generate consistent reports. Let’s not forget: Transparent climate reporting is a powerful tool. Reliable data helps countries to design more effective policies and direct resources where they are most needed. It is also an opportunity to highlight successes and inspire others to follow suit in ambitious climate action. UN Climate Change will continue to provide reporting support and practical assistance to countries, allowing them to fulfil their reporting requirements accurately and efficiently. Ever wondered how Artificial Intelligence can support bolder #climateaction? 🚀 💡 Some examples: AI could optimize the integration of renewable energy into national power grids. Or it could help provide targeted real-time information to vulnerable communities to both avert and prepare for climate change impacts. If you are working on AI solutions for climate action, our new AI Innovation Grand Challenge might be for you. It aims to: 🌍 Identify AI solutions that can accelerate climate action in developing countries, in particular in Least Developed Countries or Small Island Developing States. 💪 Support the development and scaling-up of identified solutions. 📢 Enhance access to AI-powered climate solutions through an open online repository Learn more and submit your proposal: https://bit.ly/3VYBHFW
