Earth is becoming hotter and more dangerous for everyone, everywhere. Together with ten specialized UN entities, UN Secretary-General António Guterres has launched a Call to Action on Extreme Heat. The paper published today calls for an urgent and concerted effort to address extreme heat in four critical areas: 👭 Caring for the vulnerable 👷♀️Protecting workers 📊 Boosting resilience of economies and societies using data and science 💚Limiting temperature rise to 1.5°C by phasing out fossil fuels and scaling up investment in renewable energy. What I'm seeing on my home island, Carriacou, must not become humanity's new normal. If governments everywhere don’t step up, 8 billion people will be facing this blunt force trauma head on, on a continuous basis. We need climate action back at the top of political agendas.

“No climate adaptation for farmers means no food.”   🌾 From soil preservation to cultivating drought-resilient crops, farmers are working in many ways to ensure food security for us all.   We spoke to Esther Penunia of the Asian Farmers' Association for Sustainable Rural Development (AFA), about the crucial role of family farmers in adapting to our changing climate. 👩🌾👨🌾💚

Renewable energy is at the heart of climate action. 💚   At #COP28, the world decided to transition away from fossil fuels and triple renewable energy capacity by 2030.   But what does this mean exactly, and how can we achieve it?   Listen to International Energy Agency (IEA) expert Heymi Bahar explain.

The climate crisis is pushing disasters to record-breaking new levels of destruction. Whether in my homeland of #Carriacou, which is today being hammered by Hurricane #Beryl; or in the communities of some of the largest economies recently crippled by heatwaves and floods; or in other parts of the world experiencing massive wildfires and brutal droughts, we can't sit by and watch while the spiraling climate wreaks havoc. The solutions are clear: We need bolder national climate plans, speeding up the transition away from fossil fuels. We need strong adaptation plans, building resilient communities. We need much bigger and better finance, the great enabler of climate action. Events like these show there are limits to adaptation and we need a fully resourced Loss and Damage fund. We need more climate action delivery, not climate despair. And we need it now.

📢 Just launched: The online reporting tools for the Paris Agreement’s Enhanced Transparency Framework (#ETF), an essential instrument in helping countries submit their new Biennial Transparency Reports, due this year. Thanks to the hard and diligent work of my colleagues here at UN Climate Change, and our partners, these new tools will enable countries to compile their data efficiently and generate consistent reports. Let’s not forget: Transparent climate reporting is a powerful tool. Reliable data helps countries to design more effective policies and direct resources where they are most needed. It is also an opportunity to highlight successes and inspire others to follow suit in ambitious climate action. UN Climate Change will continue to provide reporting support and practical assistance to countries, allowing them to fulfil their reporting requirements accurately and efficiently.
