Simply explained: What is spin coating? ⤵️ Spin coating is the process of evenly coating a spinning substrate with a solution. The solution, for instance, a photosensitive resist, is typically dispensed at the center of the wafer. Subsequent acceleration as well as the rotation speed and the time allotted to the individual steps ensure that a homogeneous layer thickness remains after excess resist is spun off. Alongside the process parameters, the physical properties of the solution or photoresist determine the thickness of the applied film. ➡️ For all those who do not deal with this topic on a daily basis, we have tried to make the whole thing even clearer using an easy example: A spin coater is used to apply uniform and ultra-thin layers of photosensitive resist liquids onto the flat surface of wafers. This is crucial for manufacturing microchips and other high-precision components in semiconductor, micro- and nanotechnology industries. The process ensures the layers are uniform, which is critical for the functionality and performance of these technologies. Imagine a plate spinning very fast. When you pour a special liquid, like a thin paint, onto the middle of the plate, it spreads out evenly because of the spinning. As it spins, the extra liquid flies off the edges, leaving behind a smooth and even layer on the plate. The speed at which the plate spins, how fast it speeds up, and how long it spins all work together to make sure the layer of liquid is just the right thickness. The type of liquid you use also affects how thick the layer becomes. Understandable? By the way: Our spin coaters, spray- and inkjet coaters have become synonymous with premium performance, ease of use, flexibility, and enhanced coating mastery. "It's okay to make mistakes." That's the mantra at SÜSS MicroTec's new training center, where customers learn to get the most out of the company's equipment. Located just steps from our headquarters in Garching, near Munich, the state-of-the-art facility welcomed its first customers last October. Led by Dr. Vu Hoa Nguyen, who previously worked as a Key Account Manager in Sales, the training team aims to build customer confidence and expertise through hands-on learning. Dr. Vu Hoa Nguyen studied electrical engineering with a focus on microsystems technology at RWTH Aachen University. As a student, he already had his first contact with SÜSS MicroTec and worked on coaters and mask aligners from our company. We asked him a few questions:   1️⃣ Why do our customers book a training course with us when the tool is already installed at their premises? ➡️ Customers pay to be able to practice on the equipment.  It's okay to make mistakes, that's part of the exercise. It's about gaining confidence in operation, familiarizing yourself and having fun. Customers do not have this degree of freedom on site. We see our educational mission as making practical knowledge more accessible. We also create a bond with our customers. And we achieve this, for example, by solving problems together during training sessions, but also by listening carefully. We take time for the day-to-day challenges that our customers face with our tools.  2️⃣ What should customers be able to do themselves as a result of the training?     ➡️ The aim is for our customers to be able to carry out around 80 to 90 per cent of regular maintenance and fault reports themselves.     For our training room for bonders, for example, we have ordered both a temporary bonder XBS300 and the debonder and cleaner XBC300.  Our customers request many of these tools to support their AI ramp-up, but at the same time they also expect a good training program. Only well-trained employees can ensure a reliable and efficient tool performance.    By the way, we also train our service technicians in our training center, who go to our customers when a complex problem arises. The need for internal and external training courses is growing at the same rate as the demand for our equipment.      3️⃣ The feedback is certainly exciting for R&D and product management in order to constantly improve our solutions, isn't it?   ➡️ That's right! We learn from our customers which actions hurt. We want to pass these things on internally in a targeted manner.      That was a little insight into our Training Center. Behind the Scenes of IP-Management: ⤵️ Intellectual property rights, especially patents, have a high (indirect) value as they can prevent imitation and thus sustain exclusivity and competitive advantages. Among other things, they are an important way of recovering R&D investments, e.g. through higher sales due to fewer or non-existent competitor products. On the other hand, the process for obtaining a patent is not really cheap and a patent application also harbors the risk that competitors become aware of the company's own technology. This is because a patent application is published after 18 months at latest.  A patent application therefore requires careful consideration and preparation. Marlo Sedlmair is Manager Intellectual Property at SÜSS MicroTec and we were allowed to ask him 3 questions: 1️⃣ Why is SÜSS MicroTec expanding its patent system?  We want to handle even more tasks in this area internally. Before I joined SUSS MicroTec in 2021, patent law firms took care of all relevant matters. Thanks to expanded in-house capacities, an excellent division of labour is now possible. With my colleagues taking over i. a. the important and time-consuming IP administration & litigation, I have the opportunity to improve (proactive) intellectual property management.      2️⃣ How does SÜSS MicroTec monitor the market and protect its patents?  Enforcing patents, especially process patents, is challenging because their infringement is not immediately obvious. We rely on thorough market observation and strategic research to uncover patent infringements. This proactive approach is to be further strengthened. 3️⃣ Have we ever prevented competitors from obtaining a patent?  Yes, we recently successfully finished an opposition procedure against a patent filed by a competitor. By internally conducting a thorough prior art search and subsequent internal drafting of the opposition brief, the company was able to prove that there was no inventive step. We are proud that our hybrid bonding all-rounder XBC300 Gen2 D2W/W2W is to be added to fab equipment capabilities inside the Center of Neovation in Florida. The Center for Neovation is a 109,000-square-foot microelectronics fabrication facility operated by SkyWater Technology within the framework of a public-private partnership with Osceola County and BRIDG. The facility is designed to be flexible and adaptable with opportunities to accommodate a variety of partner-funded semiconductor manufacturing research and development activities. Leveraged by our partnership with BRIDG, a not-for-profit, public-private partnership specializing in advanced system integration and packaging of next-generation microelectronics production process technologies, we have been able to use the Center of Neovation as a production-level application center since 2019. This partnership provides the Center of Neovation with state-of-the-art equipment ranging from advanced lithography and nano-imprinting to temporary bonding, debonding and permanent bonding while granting our North American customers access to breakthrough innovations. Chasing awards: Is it worth the effort? ⤵️ Investor relations teams put in long hours building relationships with investors. And that has paid off. 🏆 Our IR team at SÜSS MicroTec recently brought home a nice trophy from the annual conference of the German Investor Relations Association (DIRK – Deutscher Investor Relations Verband). We were awarded 3rd place in the category "Best IR work in the SDAX".  It is an honour to be recognised for this work. Our IR experts Sven Köpsel and Franka Schielke were thrilled - as was the rest of the SÜSS MicroTec team. Thanks to all the investors and analysts who voted for our team. ➡️ But we didn't get into investor relations for the trophies. We do it to build trust and transparency with shareholders. Awards are just icing on the cake. The real reward is knowing we helped our investors make informed decisions.  Our conclusion: While awards can be motivating, they shouldn't be the goal.  The goal is serving investors through open communication and accessibility. Can you believe it's been 75 years since SÜSS MicroTec opened its doors? What started as a small family business has developed into a leading company in the semiconductor industry. Through decades of innovation and continuous hard work, SÜSS MicroTec has made tremendous progress while remaining true to its roots. To mark the anniversary, we recently organized festive celebrations at both our Garching and Sternenfels sites. Both events were joyful family gatherings for employees, their partners and children - fitting for a company that began as a family business. Highlights included delicious food and drinks from the festival's food trucks, live bands spreading good vibes and fun activities such as bouncy castles to keep the children entertained. Despite a few rain showers in Garching, the atmosphere remained great.  The sunshine in Sternenfels made for a relaxed outdoor get-together. In speeches at both locations, CEO Burkhardt Frick particularly emphasized that SÜSS MicroTec owes its success to generations of talented and hard-working employees. With these two celebrations, we wanted to combine the appreciation of the past with the anticipation of the future. Last Friday, we started our 75-year anniversary celebration in our headquarter in Garching near Munich. 🥳 In his opening speech, our CEO Burkhardt Frick recognized the achievements of all employees: "Without you, we would not be celebrating this anniversary."    In addition, some guests of honor were also there to celebrate with the SÜSS MicroTec team: ➡️ Dr. Winfried Süss, son of the company founder and long-standing Managing Director and later Chairman of the Supervisory Board of SÜSS MicroTec. In his speech, he reminisced about the early days. "The hard work, ingenuity and commitment of the employees have made the company what it is today." ➡️ Dr. Florian Herrmann, Head of the Bavarian State Chancellery and State Minister of Federal, and European and Media Affairs. In his speech, he described SÜSS MicroTec as the "flagship of the Bavarian high-tech industry" and a "role model for technological and industrial development in Bavaria". ➡️ Dr. Dietmar Gruchmann, 1st Mayor of Garching, mentioned that it was a matter of course for him to join our 75-year anniversary celebration.   ➡️ We also had the pleasure of welcoming Dr. Ian-Tsing Joseph Dieu, General Director of the Taipei Representation in Munich, to our party. In his speech, he emphasized the strong connection between Taiwan and Bavaria which is why SÜSS MicroTec could be sure that Taiwan will remain a reliable partner in the future.
