Welcome to our monthly series examining the revenue opportunities for battery storage on spot and balancing markets. This month, for the first time, we take a look at the aFRR capacity market and observe some exceptional days on the spot markets. How much could a stand-alone battery storage system have earned in Germany in June? 💸 We compare 3 different trading strategies (single markets, a spot market benchmark and our multi-market strategy) and their respective trading incomes of June for a 10MW / 20MWh storage with a round-trip efficiency of 90% and an average of 1.35 daily cycles. For benchmarking our multi-market strategy across spot markets, FCR and aFRR, we compare our simulation results to the maximum possible incomes on FCR and aFRR capacity markets as well as the use of a linear optimizer that trades each spot market individually and in one case all spot markets combined. To achieve realistic outcomes, we utilize market forecasts for optimization and actual prices for settlements, ensuring no assumption of perfect foresight. Trade execution on the continuous intraday market is estimated using the ID1 price index. 🔎 Our Findings: 🔋To make it quick: in June every market was very attractive. 🔋Our benchmarks from the linear optimizer already achieves 10-18k€/MW on single spot markets which is an increase of ~50% to May and would amount to 127-223k€/MW/year - if you could extrapolate those results over 12 months. Those income potentials from spot markets come to a large part from 2 outlier days in June (empty sell side in the continuous intraday orderbook on the 03. & EPEX day-ahead auction decoupling on the 26.). 🔋Additionally ancillary service prices remained outstanding with our FCR benchmark exceeding individual spot markets except the continuous intraday and aFRR trumping all of them. By just participating in each block, 14.8k€/MW, 20.7k€/MW, 21.6k€/MW and even 22.4k€/MW could have been achieved for FCR, negative, stacked and positive aFRR this month. So those high ancillary service prices made it again reasonable to trade at a pretty low average of 1.35 cycles per day, below a cycle number we would usually go for in months with these attractive spot markets. 🔋Still the benchmark of the linear optimizer, which combines day-ahead, intraday auction and the continuous intraday, exceeds those ancillary service results with 24k€/MW. 🔋However, all those results don't compare to our multi-market strategy optimized with the suena autopilot - reaching 38.1k€/MW, outperforming our best benchmark, which is 36% lower. This underscores the value of cross-market trading, integrating ancillary services with spot markets. Our analysis reveals that by operating batteries solely on single markets in June, you leave around 41-72% of potential incomes on the table. German Capacity Market: Key to ensuring renewable energy reliability and reducing gas dependency🔋 In spring, the expert exchange “Large-scale storage technology and energy market flexibility” took place at Hamburg City Hall. Dr. Lennard Wilkening, Johannes Alexander Müller and Kilian Leykam gave keynote speeches, while 35 representatives from 23 companies took the opportunity to engage in an intensive professional exchange. It was an exciting and informative discussion that focused on the need for a German capacity market. This should ensure flexibility and backup capacities and is therefore essential for the reliability of a renewable electricity system, especially in view of the coal phase-out and the increasing feed-in from wind and solar energy. The use of battery storage has the potential to reduce the need for gas-fired power plants by 9 GW - an immense achievement! International experience from countries such as Belgium, the UK and Poland shows that capacity markets can be successfully introduced. These markets are based on annual central auctions that bundle capacities from power plants, storage facilities and demand response, with different contract terms depending on the type of plant. Several key points are decisive for Germany: 🔋 Derating factor: Participation of technologies based on availability in critical congestion hours. 🔋 Plant availability: Technical supply capability without disrupting energy trading, coupled with capacity payments and refunds in the event of high electricity prices. 🔋 Local distribution: Regional allocation signals to optimize site selection and grid load. 🔋 Auction format: With a “pay as cleared” mechanism, market transparency and fairness can be ensured. 🔋 Contract durations: Combination of T-1 and T-4 auctions and longer contract terms for investment security. 🔋 Plant degradation: Strategies such as repowering and retrofitting to meet long-term capacity obligations despite battery ageing. In addition, only CO2-free or low-carbon plants should receive capacity payments, which includes the participation of hydrogen power plants after their conversion to H2. A German capacity market that facilitates efficient, advanced and optimized storage projects can be an enormous booster to accelerate the energy transition and to reach our climate targets. #capacitymarket #energytransition #largescalestorage #suenaGmbH #Hamburg
