The ranking "America’s Best Midsize Companies 2024" identifies top-performing U.S. companies based on Employee Satisfaction, Revenue Growth, and Sustainability Transparency. Employee Satisfaction was measured through surveys from approximately 170,000 employees, focusing on various workplace aspects. Revenue Growth was assessed using Statista’s database, considering companies with revenues between $100 million and $10 billion and positive growth over the last three years. Sustainability Transparency was evaluated through ESG data, considering environmental, social, and governance factors, and the final ranking score was derived by equally weighting these three dimensions. Due to the success of companies like NVIDIA or OpenAI, many people know about the AI arms race, the corresponding hype bubble and the chips required to power the underlying data centers. Fewer people know that even though Nvidia sells AI-focused products like their A100, H100 or B100 data center platforms, they don't produce the semiconductors themselves. This task falls to TSMC, a chip foundry from Taiwan. Foundries manufacture all kinds of semiconductors for companies that can't or won't produce chips themselves. And in the field of semiconductor foundries, no other company even comes close to TSMC's dominance. Data from Counterpoint Research shows that in the first quarter of 2024 TSMC had a revenue-based market share of 62 percent. This is unsurprising, as TSMC has been manufacturing chips for Nvidia for decades and the latter is struggling to keep up with increasing demand for their hardware powering the AI gold rush. "We’ve observed more evidence to support that the AI demand is real, with increasing CAPEX of cloud service providers adopting the AI hardware first and the following would be enterprises", says Counterpoint Research analyst Adam Chang. "We expected the demand for AI to remain strong in 2024, and probably more upsides in 2025. However, non-AI demand remained sluggish, but we think the inventory set-up is promising after several quarters of de-stocking." While it's unclear when the dam on this particular hype breaks and what this will do to the bottom lines of both TSMC and Nvidia, it's unlikely that the former's market share will take any major hits. Historically, TSMC has had a foundry market share upwards of 50 percent since at least mid-2021, four times as big as its biggest competitor Samsung Foundry. However, Samsung Electronics' foundry market share needs to be taken with a grain of salt since they also produce the chips for their products.

The Covid-19 pandemic might have been the cause for billions of new vaccinations given out, but due to lockdowns and other restrictions that it brought about, global vaccine coverage suffered. In 2023, childhood vaccine coverage has recovered, leaving just a small dip behind for the years 2020 and 2021 when looking at the grand scheme of things. New data by the World Health Organization shows that the share of infants globally who were fully vaccinated against DTP (diphteria, tetanus and pertussis) was stable year-over-year at 84 percent after dipping to 83 and 81 percent in 2020 and 2021, respectively. However, as our racing lines show, coverage was still lacking in African countries and on the American continent. The development of vaccination coverage in these regions has been markedly different though. While the former continent exhibits an increase by almost 20 percentage points between 2003 and 2023, the share of vaccinated infants actually decreased in the Americas, dropping below the 90-percent threshold in 2017 from previous highs of 93 to 94 percent between 2003 and 2016. 

The nominations for the Television Academy’s hotly anticipated Emmy Awards were announced on Wednesday, with FX Productions’ historical drama series “Shōgun” taking the lead with 25 nods. Shōgun, which tells the tale of a power struggle in feudal Japan, marks the second-ever non-English language series to be nominated for an Outstanding Drama Series award, only after Squid Games in 2022. Other nominations included Anna Sawai for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, as well as Hiroyuki Sanada for the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. On its heels was “The Bear”, another production by FX, this time a comedy. The Bear is about a young chef in Chicago who takes over running his family sandwich shop after his brother died. The series has broken the record for the highest number of nominations received in a year for a comedy. Last year, the first series of the show had already performed well with 13 nominations. Other high performing TV shows included the mystery comedy-drama “Only Murders In The Building” by Hulu (21) and the fourth season of “True Detective: Night Country” by HBO (19). NBC’s broadcast “Saturday Night Live” nearly doubled its nominations since last year at 17, up from 9. With competition fierce among the streaming industry’s major players, Netflix dominated the lineup this year, securing 107 nominations in total. Alongside “The Crown” (18), the network also received nominations for “Ripley” (13) and “Baby Reindeer” (11). Meanwhile, FX received 93 nominations and HBO/Max was given 91.
