Speira invests NOK 414 million in a new furnace for recycled material! "This investment secures a large number of jobs in Holmestrand for the foreseeable future. The old furnace has been in operation for 50 years and the new one is expected to last at least another 50 years. This is very good news," explains Jon Gaasholt, plant manager at Speira Holmestrand. With the new furnace, we will be able to process an additional 22,000 tons of scrap per year. This means that about half of the site's production will be based on recycled scrap. This will reduce the carbon footprint of the Holmestrand operations by 150,000 tons of CO2. The furnace will also reduce NOx emissions and odors from the site. Exciting developments at Speira R&D in Bonn! Our test trials at the Recycling Technology Center are diving into the intricacies of #aluminium scrap melting. We are evaluating the performance of various energy sources for melting different aluminium scrap types while also analyzing how different processing methods affect scrap behavior during melting. Here is a glimpse into our last test: A minimum of 300 kg of input material is manually charged into the lab single-chamber furnace. After complete melting, we skim the furnace and extract a representative dross sample. Following this, we empty the furnace in 250 kg ingots and take spectrometer and melt-quality samples during the casting process. In other trials, the same lab furnace is set up as a shaft furnace to resemble our production #recycling furnaces, which are capable of melting scrap with up to 5% organic content. We continue our transformation for aluminium #recycling with our new furnace 6! With this furnace, we are now able to produce more slabs at the Hamburg casthouse while incorporating more scrap. This allows us to reduce our CO2 footprint and metal costs. Step by step to Europe’s recycling hub - #TeamSpeira is investing 40 million euros for additional #recycling capacity to drive the transformation of Rheinwerk and achieve a total saving of up to 1.5 million tonnes of CO2 per year. “We want to become the number 1 in aluminium recycling in Europe” explains Boris Kurth, Head of the Can Business and Recycling. The furnace will be built in 2025 and the remodelling of the casting plant are step one that will be followed by others. Production is scheduled to start at the beginning of 2026. “With its strategic location in the heart of Europe, we are expanding Rheinwerk into a leading recycling hub for our industry, which is our long-term goal for our complete transformation” explains Boris.
