Circular economy: new recommendations to increase the return of used mobile phones, tablets and laptops 📱🔄♻️
Did you know? Only 5% of mobiles are collected, leaving a whopping 700 million unused in EU households! That's at least two per person. And guess what? These old devices are loaded with rare-earth precious raw materials like cobalt, indium, tantalum, and much more. Increasing the repair and re-use of small electronics as well as recycling of waste will support the shift to a circular economy & contribute to the supply for critical raw materials.
Last week, European Commission introduced game-changing recommendations to revive used electronic and incentivise the return of used and waste mobile phones, tablets, laptops. The recommendations focus on effective measures and incentives to increase the collection rate of small electronics across the EU, giving them a second life. It’s a win-win where people can benefit in many ways, while the circular economy grows and we don’t lose critical raw materials.
The key recommendations include:
1️⃣ financial incentives
2️⃣ better postal services for returns
3️⃣ partnerships with reuse organizations
4️⃣ improving awareness of collection points
