Did you know that chemicals in sunscreen can harm coral reefs? 🪸🌊   According to a 2022 National Academy of Sciences study, chemicals found in many popular sunscreen brands are known to damage aquatic life, including corals.   Coral reefs are incredibly valuable, providing billions in economic and environmental services such as food, coastal protection, and tourism. Aside from harmful sunscreen chemicals, they face severe threats from climate change, overfishing, pollution, coastal development, disease, and invasive species.   You'll know your sunscreen is safe to wear into the ocean if it does NOT contain these two red flag chemicals: oxybenzone or octinoxate.   Mineral sunscreens are less damaging, and UV-protective clothing is also recommended as a safer alternative.   To further protect our oceans, consider recycling your sunscreen bottle after use. Many bottles are recyclable, and by doing so, you contribute to reducing waste and supporting a circular economy. ♻️   If you prefer aerosol sunscreen, recycling the can is important too. Aerosol cans are typically made of aluminum or steel, both valuable metals that can be endlessly recycled into new products. Here's how to recycle them properly: 🔆 Use up all the product inside the aerosol can. Ensure it's completely empty by shaking it and listening for any remaining liquid. 🔆 Remove the plastic cap separately, as it's often made of a different type of plastic. 🔆 Do not puncture the can or attempt to remove the spray nozzle yourself, as it can be dangerous. 🔆 Check with your local recycling program to see if aerosol cans are accepted with other metal recyclables or if they need special handling as household hazardous waste (HHW). By recycling your sunscreen bottles and aerosol cans, you're not only protecting coral reefs but also promoting sustainability in our communities. At the RLG HQ, our Finance Team recently organized a fantastic volunteering initiative, cleaning up our local river, the Isar. 🐟 In the summer, the Isar is a popular destination for Munich locals to spend time and relax - as a result, the area tends to accumulate litter.
