Process heat accounts for 47% of the industry's #energy demand and 3/4 of its CO2 emissions 🏭 To achieve EU #climate goals and allow for a competitive European industry, direct #electrification is needed! But what is the current state of direct electrification and what are the potentials and challenges that the industry is facing? 🤔 Here are key takeaways from an Agora Industry report that analysed 7 #EU industry sectors and 14 applications👇 ⚡️90% potential for process heat direct electrification 💡Technologies under development and further innovations will be needed in the medium and long terms ⚠️ Market and organisational barriers are deterring the rollout of electrification on a large scale and they must be overcome ⚡️ Read the full report 👉 https://lnkd.in/gB6GA7eG
Renewables Grid Initiative
Gemeinnützige Organisationen
We are a unique group of transmission system operators (TSOs) and environmental NGOs collaborating on a #RenewablesGrid.
Info
The Renewables Grid Initiative is a unique group of transmission system operators (TSOs) and environmental and climate NGOs collaborating on a nature-friendly renewables grid for the energy transition. Our aim is to speed up the transition towards a renewables-based energy system. We promote grid development in harmony with people and nature. To do this, we share and develop best practices for: energy scenario building; nature protection and restoration; and fair and inclusive public engagement. Today we offer a warm welcome to the two newest Members of OCEaN - North and Baltic Seas: EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg AG and Danmarks Naturfredningsforening! 🔷 💡 EnBW is an experienced #offshore wind developer committed to achieving climate neutrality by 2035 while the Danish Society for Nature Conservation is Denmark's largest #nature conservation and environmental organisation. We look forward to collaborating with EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg AG and Danmarks Naturfredningsforening in OCEaN - North & Baltic Seas on our shared priority to accelerate nature-friendly offshore wind and #grids and support the joint achievement of #climate and #biodiversity targets. 💬 Holger Grubel, Head of Portfolio Development Offshore Wind, EnBW, emphasised on joining OCEaN that “the preservation of biodiversity is a central component of environmental protection and a sustainable offshore wind development. Convinced that these goals cannot be achieved alone, we look forward to working with OCEaN and its members to develop solutions for protecting the marine biodiversity while installing more offshore wind capacity." 💬 Lars Midtiby, Director, the Danish Society for Nature Conservation, noted they are “dedicated to conserving nature for future generations, addressing the biodiversity crisis, and ensuring a just transition to renewable energy sources. Joining the Offshore Coalition for Energy and Nature enhances our efforts to combat climate change and protect our environment. We are excited about this opportunity to strengthen our work on these critical issues." 📣 Read the full announcement 👉 https://lnkd.in/ekvUXt3H

Electricity needs yoga just like the rest of us! This week on #SunWindWires we’re exploring flexibility in the renewables-based electricity system. 🌱 Energy Transition 🌱 In the old world, power plant operators could easily adjust outputs from coal, gas, and oil plants. However, with the shift to renewable energy, planning and control have become more complex as no one can control the sun or wind. 🧠 Strategic Use of Renewables 🧠 To maximise renewable energy, we need to 'stockpile' it when it’s abundant. For instance, industries can increase production, supermarkets can lower fridge temperatures, and drivers can charge their electric cars during peak renewable times. This is known as ‘flexibility’ or ‘load shifting’. 🧘 Market, System, and Grid 🧘 Flexibility will impact three key areas: the market (electricity trading and price setting), the system (keeping the frequency stable at around 50 Hz), and the grid (ensuring stable voltage and preventing overloads). 📈 Market Benefits 📈 In the market, flexibility helps balance supply and demand, stabilising electricity prices. This is crucial for integrating renewable energy into the trading system. ⚙️ System Stability ⚙️ For the system, flexibility maintains frequency stability, which is essential for the reliable operation of electrical devices and overall grid health. 🔌 Grid Management 🔌 On the grid level, flexibility helps prevent overloading of infrastructure like overhead lines and transformers, ensuring efficient energy distribution and avoiding blackouts. 💡 Incentives for Energy Management 💡 For widespread success, the economic framework must evolve to offer variable electricity prices and financial incentives for energy-efficient renovations. This could enable large-scale adoption of solar energy systems and efficient heat management across European neighbourhoods. 📙 Sun, Wind & Wires 📙 Download ‘Sun, Wind & Wires: Atlas of an Energy System in Transition’ to learn about electricity yoga.
