The Buoy Bottle is outstanding in the way it is produced and the impact it can have. In an interview, Pascal Schaller explains the production process and what obstacles they had to overcome in order to get the product they have now. ⬇ 🔴 Red Dot: Sustainable production was the focus of Buoy’s development. Can you tell us something about the material? Pascal Schaller: We are very proud of the fact that we use 100 per cent recycled ocean-bound plastic. It is recovered from rivers and coastal regions in Mexico and California. We specifically source food-grade HDPE from recycled milk and juice bottles. A state-of-the-art recycling plant in Los Angeles processes these materials for us. 🔴 Are they easy to process or did you need innovative manufacturing techniques? Using 100 per cent recycled material is anything but easy. Even the manufacturers encouraged us to add new plastic to improve the melt flow and to simplify production. But we refused. Four years, four manufacturers and two moulds later, we finally got the product right. You have to understand that recycled plastic without additives reduces the melt flow by a factor of 10, so we had to develop a mould for these specific conditions, with larger gates and a more complex cooling system to control the flow of material in the mould. 🔴 Which design detail was most important to you in Buoy? The surface texture was a very conscious choice. We ensured that it was slightly rough for a secure grip, while at the same time providing a matt finish for the desired aesthetic. We also streamlined the bottle components to reduce weight and optimise durability, but also designed the thread to twist on and off with just a few turns for enhanced convenience. Made from 100% recycled ocean plastic, the Buoyzero Bottle is an example of circular design. 🔁 Produced using solar energy, it features a modular design for easy cleaning and use. Its optimised thread design and pleasant surface texture enhance functionality and user experience. At the end of its life, the bottle can be returned for recycling, reducing its carbon footprint by 80%. The Red Dot jury awarded it the “Best of the Best“ for its sustainability and innovative design. For one night only, the Red Dot Design Museum extended into an additional hall at the former Zeche Zollverein colliery to present the award-winning vehicles. 🤫🚗 At the Designers’ Night, the after-show party of the Red Dot Gala, guests could take a first look at the new exhibitions and admire the award-winning products. However, while the products will be on display in the Red Dot Design Museum for a whole year, the vehicles were only on display for this special night. One of the cars being shown is the Ferrari Roma Spider. Flavio Manzoni, Ferrari‘s Chief Design Officer, describes the Ferrari Roma Spider as “Unique driving pleasure dressed in elegantly light cocktail robe.” This Ferrari features a V8 engine, 8-speed dual clutch gearbox, and a wide wheelbase, making it light, responsive, and dynamic. It is inspired by classic fabric soft-topped Spider sports cars, particularly the 1969 Ferrari 365 GTS4. “Our goal at CUPRA is to provoke, arouse desire, heighten emotions, and design something so powerful it reflects our passion for discovering the unexpected,” says Jorge Diez, Head of Design. The CUPRA DarkRebel, designed with input from fans in the metaverse and transformed into a working show car, epitomizes the brand‘s rebellious spirit. It tests visions, trials innovations, and pushes design boundaries. “Small is mighty” sums up the Volvo EX30, a compact electric SUV with the smallest CO₂ footprint of any Volvo Cars vehicle to date. Katharina Sachs, Exterior Lead Designer, states, “Our biggest challenge was to create a small car that upholds Volvo’s core values, pushes boundaries, and introduces innovations.” The EX30 is designed to be the most sustainable Volvo yet, integrating brand values such as safety, comfort, and Scandinavian design in a condensed form. Since its debut in 2010, the Ducati Motor Holding Diavel has carved its own niche. Design Manager Stefano Tarabusi describes it as a special, niche product, bought out of pure passion. The Diavel V4‘s standout feature is its 240 mm wide rear tyre on a long swingarm, paired with eye-catching light alloy rims. The rear looks agile despite the wide tyres, with the mass concentrated at the front and around the sculptural fuel tank with large air intakes. Lastly, the new TATRA TRUCKS a.s. FORCE 4x4 off-road fire engines feature high safety levels for the crew and good driving characteristics, with a large approach angle. Particularly innovative is the cabin, with low entry and simple adjustability. The high-strength frame and ROPS system protect the crew in the event of an accident. The body is welded from standard profiles, with exterior aluminium panels glued to the basic structure. It was a night to remember, celebrating the pinnacle of design excellence with these incredible vehicles! ❤️

We’re still reminiscing about the Red Dot Gala 2024 ✨ The Red Dot Award: Product Design 2024 ceremony took place on 24 June in Essen, Germany. Bringing together global design leaders and brands such as Fiskars, Hilti Group, Ducati Motor Holding, Philips, LIXIL, Thule Group and Logitech, the award ceremony in the Aalto Theatre was truly an inspiring event. Highlights included an insightful speech by Lord Mayor Thomas Kufen and the presentation of the Red Dot Trophies by our esteemed jurors: Luisa Bocchietto, Omri Bar-zeev, and Nina Mihovec. The Aalto Ballet delivered an astonishing performance choreographed by Armen Hakobyan, depicting the phenomenon of sleep paralysis from falling asleep to waking up. The award ceremony ended with honouring the Red Dot: Design Team of the Year 2024: the Thule Design Team. But the celebration didn’t stop there. At the Designers’ Night held at the Red Dot Design Museum Essen, guests danced into the early hours and explored the new exhibitions, which are on display until 1 June 2025. “Our name is our philosophy. ANTI stands for “A New Type of Interference” – and that’s exactly what brands need.” – ANTI “We started in 2008 as a punk band, a small agency that vowed never to consist of more than five people and never to do anything but design. That didn’t work out,” said the two founders, Kenneth Pedersen and Kjetil Wold Østmoen from the Norwegian agency ANTI. What worked very well, however, was to transfer this somewhat anarchistic spirit to the growing number of employees (now 75 in two offices): a strategic approach, of course. Goal-oriented communication on all analogue and digital channels – in every case. But always also breaking through boundaries, constantly questioning the status quo, taking unconventional approaches – all this still characterises ANTI’s work to this day. The agency has since been awarded with two distinctions in the Red Dot Award: 🎨 For the complex visual identity of The Research Council of Norway, a Dubins Path Generator was used to create icons for the various specialised disciplines from randomly connected points on a grid. The result was a generative system that produces dozens of variations with a uniform look. 🏙️ Based on the architectural characteristics of its namesake neighbourhood in Oslo, the “Marienlyst Display” font is the centrepiece of its new identity. It is particularly in digital applications, such as animations, that the font's playful strength becomes clear. Congratulations to the project team members of ANTI: Kristoffer Eidsnes, Veronika Artiuschenko, Markus Storsveen, Mats Ottdal, Francesca Miani, Aleksander Rønning, Vivian Ramfjord, Mads Hornsletten, Kim-André Solberg Monsen, Jennie Klemetsdal, Kristin Grimstad, Tom André Engli Storsveen, Håkon Stensholt, Hanne Dillan and Helene Grindheim. “Our paramount goal is to revolutionise the digital experience for billions of people all over the world.” - Alty Alty is an IT product outsourcing company which was founded in Ukraine in 2009. Its expertise lies in providing consulting services and designing and developing solutions for FinTech start-ups and international banks. With more than 13 years of experience, Alty has been involved in optimising hundreds of digital products for corporations around the world. However, the company views user perception as the primary measure of its success, which is why it is constantly striving to create top-quality products. Here are three award-winning projects: 📱 The “GTWorld” app – a platform designed to redefine banking services in Nigeria – was developed for GTBank, one of the country’s largest banks. The application boasts a sleek user interface, faster payments and advanced security features. ✈️ Laid-back travel was the initial inspiration for the development of the Halyk Travel app. The main idea was to unite all needed services in one place. Thus, the app offers a linear flow for purchases of plane and train tickets. It gives users the opportunity to select what they need and to go anywhere in the world. By using the budget calculator, it is possible to estimate costs in advance and avoid miscalculations. Moreover, apartments and cars can also be rented. A light and rounded design, with different kinds of cute loading animations that speak to the audience in a joyful tone, makes using the app a pleasant experience. 💳 Monobank is the first Ukrainian mobile-only bank. Since this financial institution has no branches, the service is provided solely through a mobile app which allows users to open a bank account and make full use of all offered products. The account-opening process has been simplified by dividing it into three easy steps. Potential customers only need a phone, and it takes just five minutes to become a client. The app offers a variety of banking services: from free money transfer and the paying of utility bills with no commission to loans and cashback. Customer support is provided through the most popular messenger services and by telephone. Congratulations to Taras Donchenko, Vlad Derkach and all project team members of Alty 🎉 Find out more about Alty here: https://lnkd.in/eRAn37gh #RedDotWinner #RedDotAward #CommunicationDesign

“People seem to appreciate the playfulness and visual richness the brand identity conveys.” – Thomas Kurppa Kurppa Hosk is a brand agency with offices in Stockholm and New York. It solves the complex problems of business clients by harnessing the powers of strategic thinking and design. The agency was founded in 2009 and was awarded four distinctions in the Red Dot Award. Their winning projects are: 🌬️ Vindmark specialises in the optimisation and circular repowering of existing wind farms, which requires an in-depth understanding of wind behaviour. A dynamic, timeless design inspired by the movement of the wind conveys the concept of sustainability and circularity in a visually appealing manner. 🍔 The Swedish burger chain Tugg Burgers wanted a fresher brand identity, free from stereotypes. To meet this requirement, the Kurppa Hosk Studio chose a playful communication approach in which typography and eye-catching character design play the leading roles. 🍔 With TUGG, Kurppa Hosk was able to be awarded a second time. For their rebranding, Kurppa Hosk created a visual world away from the traditional burger aesthetic, opting instead for the use of vibrant graphics to introduce the TUGG family. 🏭 The creation of the Alleima brand, formerly Sandvik, brings together 160 years of tradition with a modern design that reflects highly complex operations and precise engineering. The colour palette and authentic imagery capture both the past and the future, creating a forward-looking Scandinavian identity. Congratulations to Kurppa Hosk!
