    We’re excited to share our recent feature in Carbon Pulse! We spoke to Bryony Collins about how NeoCarbon’s innovative #DirectAirCapture (DAC) technology is set to transform the cement industry! Our technology offers #cement plants a novel way to monetize their waste heat by converting it into carbon credits. Here’s how it works: - Our DAC units harness #wasteheat – heat that would otherwise be lost. This heat is then used to capture CO2 from ambient air. For an average cement plant, this could mean removing up to 350,000 tonnes of CO2 annually. - These #credits, which currently sell for around €500-800 per tonne, represent a substantial new revenue stream for cement plants. By integrating our technology, a typical plant could generate around half a million euros per year, with larger plants earning even more! As the EU moves towards integrating carbon removals into EU ETS by 2028, the potential for additional revenue streams will expand, providing further incentives for early adopters of DAC technology. We’re proud to be working closely with industry leaders to capture CO2 from ambient air – providing a carbon-negative solution.     On August 1st we were delighted to welcome a 150 young VC community at our PT1 office Clubroom in Kreuzberg for a Paloma Party! 🍹🧊🍋🟩🍊🌮 After some tacos and cold Palomas, Ignacio Joaristi and I communicated to the crowd our origins as a fund and the evolution of our investment theses through a direct simile to our signature Paloma recipe. As a reminder: - PT1 started 2018 as PropTech1 with a focus on building a strong LP and expert network in the proptech ecosystem. - We naturally progressed into technology in the broader real asset transformation space, encompassing infrastructure, energy & carbon, and construction. - This shift was the catalyzer for our rebrand in 2023 to PT1, reflecting the widening of our investment spectrum and substantiating our stance as a thesis driven fund.     Did you know that by leveraging low-degree (20-200°C) #wasteheat, we have the potential to remove 1.3 gigaton of CO2 per year? According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), we need to remove a minimum of 6 gigaton of CO2 annually to tackle climate change effectively. Harnessing waste heat from industrial processes is a promising way to maximize the potential for #carbonremoval and turn industrial waste heat into a valuable resource. Many industries generate significant amounts of waste heat as a by-product of their operations. Some of the key sectors include - #Cement production - #Chemical manufacturing - Iron and #steel production - Pulp and paper manufacturing By implementing waste heat recovery systems, such as retrofitting new Direct Air Capture (#DAC) technologies, industries can effectively capture CO2 from ambient air.     We are a proud buyer of the very first ton of #carbon dioxide removed from the atmosphere through NeoCarbon! Why is this more than just an empty gesture or a way to greenwash some of our own carbon emissions? Because this first metric ton of removed #CO2 through our portfolio company is only the humble beginning of a significant step in the fight against #climate change. Inevitably, we will have to embrace the concept of direct air capture – technologies that extract carbon dioxide directly from the ambient air. Since 2022, the IPCC recognises that carbon dioxide removals (CDR) are critical to addressing climate change – and they need to be executed on a monumental scale if we are to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. There are two approaches that can lead to grand-scale greenhouse gas removal: 1. The centralised approach: There are a handful of places around the world like Iceland that offer the right conditions for industrial-scale carbon removal facilities. By using #sustainable geothermal energy, enough power can be produced to make these facilities ecologically and economically viable. The captured CO2 is subsequently stored in the ground (sequestration). 2. The decentralised approach (the NeoCarbon way): An alternative option is to go where energy and carbon dioxide is actually emitted – and that means basically every large building, whether it may be manufacturing factories, data centers or cooling towers on top of shopping centers. NeoCarbon’s systems can be cost-effectively retrofitted, using the waste heat to power carbon capture. The CO2 can then either be stored or, even better, used directly at the site. Breweries and drink companies, for example, can use the CO2 to carbonate beverages, while cement producers can utilise it to harden their concrete.   But why should the built world install carbon capture systems on their roofs? The popular practice of becoming "net-zero" via buying cheap credits from remote carbon offset projects is facing much more scrutiny for good reasons. As the Guardian reported, “more than 90% of rainforest carbon offsets by the biggest certifier are worthless”, thereby producing only “phantom credits”. These practices will be outlawed by more and more governments around the world. Additionally, industrial buildings and their owners will be required to put their waste heat to use rather than to blow it into the air - or face penalties. So what better way to offset a company’s own emissions than to utilise this energy to capture carbon that you use or generate quality removal credits? This is why our own humble, green carbon removal certificate is only a way to signify the start of NeoCarbon’s big journey to capture CO2 on a gigaton scale – and we are excited to be a part of it!
