Rhoda Bueno Andrada says that she has always been competitive – a trait that’s driven her career as a video game industry executive. Thriving in the fast-paced, demanding world of gaming, it’s no surprise this Hawaii native is also drawn to the thrill of fast cars. Her passion for Porsche led her to start her own online community on Instagram and, in 2019, co-founding FemPowered – a grassroots organisation dedicated to empowering and supporting women in driving both on track and on the road in California’s Bay Area. With a deep love for high-performance sportscars and driving them on the racetrack, Rhoda understands how daunting it can be to step into that world for the very first time – and that’s where FemPowered comes in, helping to disprove the outdated cliché that fast cars aren’t for women. We joined Rhoda as she took her 911 GT3 (type 992) in vibrant Ruby Star paint out on the racetrack to tell us about her love for driving it and why the Porsche community is so special to her. Aerodynamics: Miniature models in the wind tunnel Model vehicles feature in many a display case as diminutive dream cars. There is a rather special collection in the #Porsche company archives that documents research objects – in a variety of scale sizes. Such as the concept for a 1 : 5 wind tunnel model of the Porsche 935/78, otherwise known as the Moby Dick. Just one of many other models, it represents the meticulous approach to vehicle development at Porsche. In the late 1960s, the experts in the Motorsport department began to use miniature vehicle bodies to obtain important information at an early vehicle development stage and then incorporate this into the development process. This saved time and money. As soon as the cornerstones like the position of the driver, the tank, and the engine had been determined and the body had been drafted, they would produce a model for the wind tunnel in a matter of weeks. Designer Luca Trazzi turned to the Sonderwunsch team at Porsche to realize his unique project. A 993-generation 911 Speedster was missing from the Porsche enthusiast’s extensive Speedster collection. Together with the experts at #Porsche, he made his dream car a reality. Taking on the role of a project manager, he became deeply involved with the Sonderwunsch team, focusing on the collaborative, creative car development process and actively following its implementation. It took three years to create his one-off car based on a Type 993 911 Carrera Cabriolet from 1994. The two-seater, with its characteristic shortened windscreen and rear lid, also underwent comprehensive technical modifications and is one of the highlights of this year’s Monterey Car Week in California. A circular economy, smart energy supply and more The new battery storage system provides important insights into how to supply an automotive plant with energy in an intelligent fashion. It also facilitates the expansion of an adaptable power grid. “Of course, this is about environmental aspects and the core issue of the energy supply. But it was also important to us to take a pioneering role with the storage system,” says Alwin Schmid, Head of Electrical Engineering at Porsche, explaining the goals of the project. Schmid is the initiator of the project, which was based on a feasibility study in collaboration with the Westsächsische Hochschule Zwickau. “In this unprecedented model project, we were able to combine a number of different goals, including peak load capping, optimisation of self-consumption and simultaneous participation in the energy market.” This versatility in terms of usage makes the Porsche pilot project unique in the field of industrial energy storage.
