🔷 What is actually climate change adaptation and whose views (on what it is) are reflected in the quest for solutions? This article 🌿by Marta Olazabal, Ana Terra Amorim-Maia, Cecilia Alda Vidal, Sean Goodwin reminds us that rushing into solutions and forgetting the fundamentals of a social process may lead to failure. The article explains how imaginaries of adaptation 🍃shape how adaptation is planned and executed. These imaginaries influence #policy, investment, and #governance 🏛. It also highlights how without inclusive participation, such adaptation planning can promote perspectives that further reinforce inequalities and marginalization. Current adaptation 🍀 approaches often rely on top-down methods 📶 which sometimes standardize processes, actors, and solutions. This not only limits the scope for #innovative and context-specific #interventions but also overlooks pluralistic 🔅 #knowledge that is critical for addressing local #vulnerabilities. Such approaches fail to produce flexible, evolving responses to community needs. The article suggests that adaptation needs to move beyond these restrictive practices to foster more inclusive and #resilient interventions 🔆. By embracing diverse knowledge #systems, encouraging experimentation, and acknowledging the complexity of adaptation 🍂, we can overcome structural limits and cultivate pluralistic, bottom-up solutions 🌐, such as everyday adaptations and nature-based solutions (NbS), that truly address evolving societal needs and expectations 💫. A network-based organisation that provides knowledge services supporting just and effective climate adaptation
Info
PlanAdapt is a global network-based organisation that provides knowledge services in support of economically just, socially inclusive and effective climate adaptation around the world. PlanAdapt approaches complex challenges through transdisciplinary mixed methods and engagement of doers and thinkers across the spheres of science, policy and practice. PlanAdapt focuses on a suite of advisory services that enable innovative and effective adaptation to climate impacts and manage climate-related risks. We are a group of ‘thinkers’, that conduct applied research and develop conceptual approaches for adaptation, and ‘doers’ in sectors and contexts where future climate risks matter. This mixture allows us to constantly calibrate our knowledge pool through balancing tacit, experience-based knowledge from our practitioners and explicit knowledge from research and theory. PlanAdapt brokers knowledge between the people, businesses, authorities that identify and feel climate risks and the ones that offer solutions and relevant information. Our mission is to develop and spread ‘good practice’ in climate change adaptation work that will always be inspired by and measured against positive impacts for people that suffer from and lose through the negative effects of climate change. In order to do so, we support public and private actors in effectively integrating climate risks into their strategies, processes and projects in relevant sectors, such as agriculture, forestry, water resource management, coastal protection, human development, energy, infrastructure, health, tourism. Our services are equally informed by science and practice, strongly believing that only a mix of both can solve the practical threats related to climate impacts.

🌍 Are you working in a #climaterisk hotspot and seeking innovative solutions for #climate adaptation? Let’s collaborate! 🙌 At PlanAdapt, we’ve spent over three years developing the #Climate Co-Adaptation Lab - a space designed to co-create climate adaptation solutions. We’re looking to connect our innovation processes directly with the needs and challenges faced in the world’s most #climate-vulnerable regions. Areas and communities that struggle with too much/ too little water, new health challenges, reduction of income due to changing climatic conditions and more 💧 🌽 We believe real impact happens when #local challenges meet diverse expertise and collaborative innovation. By linking #place-based engagement in climate risk hotspots with our global network of innovators, experts & researchers, we aim to develop practical, scalable solutions that respond to your community’s unique climate risks 🤝 If you're on the frontlines of climate change and want to work with international researchers and innovators to create solutions that matter in your context, let’s join forces. Together, we can co-create, test, and implement #climateadaptation strategies that can make a real difference in the communities most affected. 👉 Learn more about how we can collaborate and the Lab here: https://lnkd.in/gmz37RXc Tondelo Gungulundi, Susan Nanduddu, Ronald Ndesanjo, Eric HUBBARD, Sushila Pandit, Saul Daniel Ddumba, PhD, Christian MURAGIJIMANA, Tracy C. In Kigali, Rwanda, over 45 experts have gathered for the #Gender and Social Inclusion Workshop, sharing inspiring insights on advancing gender-transformative approaches in the CLARE Programme. The discussions around #GenderEquality and Inclusion (GEI) are truly powerful, highlighting the importance of collaboration and learning. We are happy for our continued collaboration with African Centre for Technology Studies (ACTS), Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, and International Development Research Centre (IDRC) that has made this exchange possible! #PlanAdapt #ClimateAdaptation #GenderEquality #InclusiveDevelopment
Advancing Gender-Transformative Climate Adaptation Research Inspiring. Encouraging. Impressive. 'Aha!'—these are just a few of the words shared after the first day of our Gender and Social Inclusion Workshop held this week in Kigali, Rwanda. Over 45 colleagues came together to discuss how to advance gender-transformative approaches within the CLARE Programme. The energy in the room was palpable, and it was challenging to pause the engaging and intense conversations, especially when projects presented their Gender Equality and Inclusion (GEI) approaches. In the coming days, we'll continue exchanging insights on GEI methodologies, learning more about Rwanda’s history—including a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial—and exploring further opportunities for collaboration. We are grateful to Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and International Development Research Centre (IDRC) for supporting this exchange formats and thank our colleagues of the GEI Working Group, Vanguarde Economics and our dear colleagues at African Centre for Technology Studies (ACTS) for the fantastic organisation and planning.
