🌎 The Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) officially comes into force today, marking a crucial step in enhancing corporate responsibility across Europe. 💡But what does this mean?  The #CSDDD requires large companies to address and mitigate the adverse impacts of their activities on human rights and the environment. This directive not only mandates corporate accountability but also introduces liabilities for failing to comply with these obligations, significantly shifting the landscape towards greater transparency and ethical business practices. Who does this affect? This directive applies to large companies with: ✅ More than 5,000 employees and €1.5 billion turnover (compliance within 3 years), ✅ More than 3,000 employees and €900 million turnover (compliance within 4 years), ✅ More than 1,000 employees and €450 million turnover (compliance within 5 years). As the CSDDD comes into effect, it is crucial for affected companies to take immediate action to ensure compliance and contribute to a more sustainable and just future! 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗼 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿? At first glance, nothing, but on closer inspection it may be more than you think: some pharmaceutical or medical products contain raw materials derived from deforestation. Deforestation threatens the environment and the habitats of various animal and plant species. Some of the commodities for which forests are cut or altered are coffee, cocoa, cattle, rubber, timber, soy and palm oil.  The EU has therefore issued a regulation to reduce deforestation. The EU Deforestation Regulation (#EUDR) requires companies, that trade, import or export products or raw materials to the EU, to provide evidence of the region of origin of these resources. What medical products contain these raw materials?  ✅ #Rubber: a versatile raw material often used in latex gloves, catheters, medical balloons, breathing tubes or plasters, for example.  ✅ #Palmoil: one of the main drivers of deforestation, used in palm oil-based medicines, wound dressings and plasters containing glycerin, as well as in soaps, shampoos and creams.  ✅ #Wood: often used in tongue depressors, cotton swabs, cellulose incontinence pads, wood furniture or bed frames.  ✅ #Cattle: less commonly found in medical products, but some medications are made from or made with bovine gelatin.   If you'd like to find out more about how the EUDR affects the healthcare industry, read our blog posts on our website: https://lnkd.in/gUKDV5MS 🔔 Do you want to learn more about the EUDR, its requirements and how the #osapiens software solution can help? 𝗘𝗨𝗗𝗥 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗼 𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆: "The key challenge is to get the data. [We want] to make it as easy as possible for the cooperatives and farmers (…) [, which] means (…) [we need to] find a solution that is quick and easy for everybody", explains Dr. Christina Rohsius, Head of Cacao and Research at Rausch GmbH - Chocolate since 1918, during the last 𝗼𝘀𝗮𝗽𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝗘𝗨𝗗𝗥 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽.   Along with products such as coffee, palm oil, timber, cattle, rubber and soy, #cocoa is one of the products most affected by the #EUDR - products that are mostly produced in the #GlobalSouth by small farmers and cooperatives, usually without much administration.   The German chocolate company has been producing and selling chocolate since 1918 and sources its raw materials directly, without intermediaries. During her recent visit to the company's cooperatives in Peru and Ecuador, Christina observed that the technical changes brought about by the EUDR framework have encouraged the cooperatives to improve their technical equipment and get to know their farmers better.
