Let's revisit the Wildcat Fire that happened this past May in Arizona, as it's a great example of how we can calculate the affected area of a fire with our Burnt Area product! The Wildcat Fire sparked on May 18th near Bartlett Lake, Arizona, about 90 kilometers (56 miles) northwest of Phoenix. If you know anything about this area, it’s that it's incredibly hot and dry - rainfall is sparse, and temperatures routinely reach 26 - 32℃ (80 - 90℉) in early May. The area itself is mainly made up of low grassland and desert shrubs. This is the perfect fuel for a wildfire, especially when combined with the dry conditions. When we measure an area using the infrared spectrum, we measure the “reflection” of the plants and land. Infrared waves we measure are absorbed at different rates by different objects, with the rest being reflected back into the environment. In this case, we can measure the reflectivity of the grassland and shrubs, which are typically highly reflective, and compare them to the ground they sit on, making it fairly easy to distinguish between the two. This concept is essentially how we calculate the Burnt Area from orbit. Along with our wildfire data, we compare the reflectivity of the area pre-fire and post-fire, giving us an accurate representation of the area that has been burned. We use this technique everywhere on the planet. This gives land managers incredible insight into their affected land and a clear view of the restoration efforts ahead! #Wildfire #BurntArea #EarthOberservation #Infrared

Detecting wildfires from space @ OroraTech

Why do energy companies need OroraTech's platform during wildfire season? For many reasons, but primarily because our app includes fire simulation modeling to predict fire behavior and spread near power lines. This feature helps: 🔥Detect fire spread direction 🔥Identify the time to impact the power grid 🔥Timely de-energize the lines 🔥Ensure employee safety 🔥Allocate fire suppression resources efficiently If your company is working on wildfire mitigation plans for the current or upcoming season, do not hesitate to contact me or our experts, Collin Ratzka and Steve Maisonet, to see how we can help! #WildfireSafety #EnergyInnovation #InfrastructureProtection #Sustainability

We always improve our Fire Spread simulation feature and compare its performance with actual fire behavior after the event. The recent Cow Valley Fire in Oregon exceeded 130,000 acres (over 52,000 hectares) of land burned. While the fire was still expanding, our Wildfire Solution experts ran a 24-hour Fire Spread simulation, which considered factors like weather, wind speed, and air moisture content to predict how quickly it would spread and in what direction. This led us to believe it would move southeast fairly rapidly across Highway 26, growing up to three times its size in that 24-hour period. Sure enough, it grew that size in the exact direction and rate as predicted. Tools like these are a huge help to first responders and land managers alike, allowing them to detect and predict fires at any place on Earth. Our ability to predict a fire’s next move could save land, lives, and property.  The Cow Valley Fire is still active today but is showing signs of slowing thanks to their amazing suppression of the Oregon State Fire Marshal’s fast response Red Team and the local wildland firefighters alike. #Wildfire #CowValleyFire #WildfireManagement #EarthOberservation

“It’s such a rewarding aspect of my job to watch the reactions of fire chiefs, GIS experts, and other specialists when they see what we do! Developing these relationships with wildfire professionals across the globe over the last few years has been truly amazing.” Today, we are highlighting our Wildfire Solution expert, whom you may already know from her educational and platform demonstration videos in the LinkedIn community: Emili Ortman! We were a much, much smaller company back in 2019 when Emili joined the team. While we had a dedicated and talented team that built an infrared camera to detect fires from space, we were still trying to understand how to make an impact on wildfire detection. “I started when we had around 10 employees, in addition to the four founders. We all sat in a tiny room belonging to the university, which was more than enough for us,” explains Emili. “Back then, our customers were more like our teachers and advisors. We weren’t trying to sell them anything, we mainly did interviews to see if we could build them something really helpful someday.” “I’ve loved seeing how quickly the company has grown from a group of curious students to the world’s leading wildfire data provider. We weren’t afraid of being flexible or receiving criticism. We had to get rid of our own assumptions about what was important and really listen to our customers about their needs and wants. This is the main driver of our success.” #EmployeeAppreciation #Marketing #Wildfire #EarthObservation

Hello from the 2024 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS) in Athens, Greece! 🇬🇷 This week, our Space Data Software Engineer, Fabian Schöttl, and Data Scientist, Christian Mollière presented our current roadmap to create sub-daily Land Surface Temperature (LST) readings as we launch our new batch of thermal platforms. Determining the exact temperature of any area, with a high revisit rate, allows scientists to study the effects of climate change and other weather events from one hour to the next. This high revisit rate also allows us insights into specific processes like water stress in vegetation and urban heat analysis, both of which are difficult to measure at scale on the ground. Also at the conference, we supported our newest partner, the Hellenic Space Center! With their booth, we were able to show the attendees our plan to help protect Greece from wildfires with our unique wildfire detection network. A huge thank you to the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS) for the invite to present and the attendees for taking an interest in our system! #EarthObservation #IGARSS2024 #Space #GeoScience Dimitris Bliziotis MSc., MEng. This week, we had the rare opportunity to give an in-depth overview of our cutting-edge FOREST-3 sensor to the Bavarian State Secretary of the Interior Sandro Kirchner, MdL, and the Head of the Bavarian State Chancellery Florian Herrmann! 🛰️ FOREST-3 was developed right here in the heart of Bavaria, at our headquarters in Munich's vibrant tech ecosystem. This development has resulted in us creating our newest workhouse, the building block of all future wildfire management constellations as we continuously research and implement detection hardware and AI to make the world a safer place. The Bavarian Stattsregierung has always encouraged our success as we build life-saving solutions for the entire world. Thank you for the support and for letting us stop by, Herr Sandro Kircher and Herr Florian Herrmann! As I am in Greece right now, it took me a while to share my thoughs on this. First of all, I am thrilled to partner with the Greek Government to enhance wildfire monitoring and prevention efforts using our advanced Earth observation technology! This achievement marks a pivotal step in our mission to combat climate change and mitigate extreme fire activity. However, while our technology provides crucial support, the true heroes in this fight are the brave men and women on the front lines. Yesterday, I witnessed several helicotpers picking up water in heavy wind conditions just a couple of meters over the open sea. I am humbled by the dedication and courage of the firefighters and pilots who risk their lives daily to protect our communities and natural resources. Their relentless efforts inspire us to continue innovating and providing the best possible tools to aid in their mission. 🧑🚒🚁🌊 Our mission is to support and appreciate everyone fighting at the frontline of climate change, as we work together towards a safer and more sustainable future. 🌱🔥 #WildfirePrevention #EarthObservation #ClimateChange #Heroes #Firefighters #Greece #OroraTech

Together with our partners in Greece, we have some very exciting news to announce! 🇬🇷 We have officially partnered with the Hellenic Space Center and Hellenic Ministry of Digital Governance to provide a nationwide wildfire management solution. As a result, we will establish the first-ever national orbital wildfire monitoring and management network. First responders will have direct access to the platform when we integrate our Wildfire Solution with the Greek emergency services. This creates seamless wildfire detection and management for this fire season as well as subsequent ones. Together with the European Space Agency - ESA’s Earth Observation Programme, we will make a real difference in Greece by combating wildfires as they occur, helping to mitigate unnecessary destruction and curb climate change.
