NIM - The Net-Zero Industries Mission

⁉ 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞 𝐍𝐞𝐭-𝐙𝐞𝐫𝐨 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬? 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐲𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐬 🌍 The creation and scaling of innovation is essential to transform the industrial sector. On 4th July 2024, the Net-Zero Industries Mission hosted a 𝐌𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐄𝐱𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐞 to explore how #Research, Development, and Innovation (#RDI) policies can create the right conditions to help achieve climate goals. Drawing on lessons from a similar exercise organised by the European Commission and presented by Ludo Diels, approximately twenty R&D policy experts from more than eight countries gathered to discuss and share insights on developing effective RDI policy mixes for decarbonising industry. Key recommendations include: 📚 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐑&𝐃 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬: Support technologies at all TRL levels through a blend of national, bilateral, and multilateral funding & collaboration opportunities. Engage industry experts via local workshops to gather practical feedback and address real needs. 💡 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭 𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬: Implement a mix of regulatory, fiscal, and economic measures to drive decarbonisation and stimulate innovation. This includes standards, IP and competition laws, tax incentives, subsidies, and green government procurement. 🏗️ 𝐄𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬: Expand infrastructure such as energy grids, distribution networks, storage facilities, and ports. Consider unique national circumstances like geography, existing industry clusters, and natural resources. Develop a skilled workforce through targeted training programmes. 🌐 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦: Ensure a functional infrastructure for monitoring progress, promoting sectoral and international collaborations, managing communities effectively, and fostering diversity and gender equality initiatives. NIM - The Net-Zero Industries Mission recently hosted an insightful workshop on the impact of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) on the global sharing of decarbonisation technologies. 🌱 Experts from IP commercialisation, #industry, government, and research sectors came together to discuss how IPR can enhance and safeguard the knowledge-sharing process. Key Messages: 🛠️ IPR as a Toolkit: IPR should be seen not as a barrier but as a toolkit that defines, controls, and protects disclosures crucial for the large-scale adoption of decarbonisation technologies. 💡 Valuable IP Elements: Understanding and defining valuable IP elements, and clarifying partner usage and benefits, ensures your IP strategy supports essential disclosures and collaborations. 🔐 Managing Disclosures: Properly managing technical secrets and sensitive information by clearly defining IP and deciding on disclosure processes is vital for respecting all stakeholders' needs. 🌍Exciting News from the Mission Innovation Annual Gathering 2024! 🌍 The NIM - The Net-Zero Industries Mission is thrilled to have actively participated in this year's Mission Innovation Annual Gathering and Clean Energy Ministerial Senior Officials' Meeting held last week in Bali, Indonesia. Thank you for the thoughtfully planned roundtables, breakout sessions, plenary meetings, workshops, and networking opportunities. These sessions left us energized and on a clear path to the 9th Mission Innovation Ministerial meeting in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil. We would like to highlight our key moments: ✔ The Net-Zero Industries Award for 2024 was announced, and our Australia-Austria joint call to decarbonize heavy industries, which was launched a few weeks ago, was introduced. ✔ Our #NIM team held several bilateral meetings to kick off our external partnership collaboration on knowledge exchange (including IEA, MPP, EIB), committed to support the MI Artificial Intelligence taskforce, and strategised with the TAG and other mission directors to increase the effectiveness and collaboration across all missions.
