Large language models (LLMs) are revolutionizing society and industry and transforming how we interact with intelligent systems. They allow us to enhance productivity across industries by generating fluent text, learning new tasks quickly and assisting with programming. However, LLMs are prone to hallucinations and may provide false information in their answers. They struggle with complex reasoning and reflect biases in their training data. To harness the benefits of LLMs while minimizing risks, we have developed the Safe LLM Framework, which includes tools like LLM Explainer and Fact Checker. LLM Explainer links generated text back to original sources, enabling users to verify the accuracy of the information. Fact Checker compares outputs to trustworthy sources and provides reasoning paths, ensuring the reliability of the generated content. By implementing these strategies and keeping humans in control, we can leverage the immense potential of LLMs for a brighter, more equitable future. NEC Technical Journal has released “the Special issue on Revolutionizing Business Practices with Generative AI.” This special issue highlights NEC’s advancements in generative AI, including the creation of an innovative environment for developing our own Large Language Model (LLM) using Japan’s largest AI supercomputer, as well as the introduction of our new generative AI service, "cotomi." Additionally, this issue provides a comprehensive overview of NEC’s generative AI technologies, emphasizing advanced applications such as automating video analytics tasks by integrating generative AI with face and object recognition technologies, and detailing the development of rules and risk management methods that conform to global standards. NEC Corporation was honored to welcome U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken to our head office in Tokyo, Japan. During his visit, Secretary Blinken toured the NEC Future Creation Hub showroom and engaged in discussions about NEC’s cutting-edge technologies. NEC President and CEO Takayuki Morita guided the tour, showcasing NEC’s advanced products and services, including submarine cables, 5G Open RAN and high-speed image recognition technologies. We had the pleasure of hosting an inspiring meet and greet with our alumni, many of whom have gone on to become prominent professors and leaders in their respective fields. The event served as the perfect occasion to reconnect with former colleagues and share and exchange innovative ideas on technological developments, while discussing future challenges and collaboration possibilities. The insights and experiences shared by our alumni were invaluable, providing unique perspectives and fresh new research possibilities. A heartfelt thank you to all our alumni who took the time to join us and contribute to the vibrant discussions. At the end of June, I visited Transgene, a partner company of NEC in the Life Sciences field, and NEC Bio Therapeutics GmbH, which recently joined the NEC group. We had exciting discussions about the future. NEC has been steadily progressing with R&D and business considerations in the Life Sciences, centered on Europe, supported by US and Japan divisions. The first photo shows the research team in the field of Healthcare and Life Science at the NEC Laboratories Europe GmbH. Transgene is located in the town of Strasbourg, France, about an hour's drive from NEC Laboratories Europe in Heidelberg, Germany. After a business discussion, I did a little sightseeing together with Saverio Niccolini, who became the CEO of NEC OncoImmunity AS in July, and Masamitsu KITASE, the Head of NEC Healthcare and Life Science team. #NEC #NECglobal #Transgene #NECBio

We have developed machine learning models using geospatial datasets to predict the risk of landmines and explosive remnants of war. As explained by our Data Ecosystems and Standards Senior Researcher Dr. Gürkan Solmaz, this proof-of-concept humanitarian AI platform combines historical and geographical data with contextual information to create a risk table that helps drone operators identify areas with a high risk of landmine presence. Our DragoNEC team paddled with great determination down the Neckar River at the annual Heidelberg Dragon Boat Cup this Saturday. Our 18 rowers put their oars to the water, delivering a spirited performance. Their unwavering resolve was rewarded on and off water, earning them the best costume award for the second year in a row!
