Info
MICT - Media in Cooperation and Transition is a German media development organization that implements projects in the Middle East and Northern Africa. Activities focus on the interplay between conflict, media coverage and reconciliation in crisis regions. MICT's services comprise the training of journalists and media producers, program and content development, production of radio programs, films and books, as well as media research and monitoring in conflict zones-. At MICT headquarters in Berlin an international team of 15 full-time staff members directs the smooth operation of all activities. All projects are realized in closed cooperation with our partners on site. Through its activities MICT is aiming to foster the transformation of conflict towards reconciliation and encourage dialogue among conflicting factions within society. Focal point is the interaction and interdependence of media and conflict. Supporting media cooperation, media networking and media development, as well as capacity building in the field of journalism is presumed to be key factor in conflict transition. MICT is financed and supported by the Belgian Foreign Ministry, the German Foreign Office, the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, UNESCO, UNIFEM, UNAMI, the Government of Canada, and the Amman Centre for Human Rights Studies.

“Is it too much to ask to be informed about your loved one's death?” asks Anna Ziablikova. She is a #LGBTQIA rights activist, and since 2022, a soldier in the Ukrainian army 🇺🇦 The Russian full-scale invasion prompted the Ukrainian LGBTQIA community to discuss their lack of legal rights. As same-sex relationships cannot be legalized, this leaves their families unprotected, unsupported and unrecognized if something unexpected happens. In the third story of our #VoicesOfPride 🏳️🌈 this month, the MICT - Media in Cooperation and Transition fellow Angelina Aredova sheds light on the struggles of LGBTQIA communities in Ukraine amidst of conflict and their ongoing fight for peace and equality. #HannahArendtInitiative Read the full story here: 🇺🇦UKR: https://shorturl.at/teurC 🇬🇧ENG: https://shorturl.at/orW4Z

Now that I am back in Berlin after three weeks of Kyiv and after successfully opening the #KyivMediaHub, I still have to remind myself sometimes that I need to think about having enough electricity to work during blackouts and about air raid alarms. Bringing those experiences to the #URC2024, means that there are two main points where we need results other than defense support: 1) Energy support. The current situation is critical. Blackouts are regularly scheduled but also happen unscheduled. Our Kyiv Media Hub for journalists to be able to continue working, is how we try to answer this challenge. But more important are significant efforts from the global community to support Ukraine with more air defense to protect its energy infrastructure as well as energy support to rebuild and transfer electricity. 2) Include Ukrainian civil society and especially media, local and national, in the recovery efforts. Without a strong civil society and recovery cannot be successful. Also if you are at #URC2024, feel free to reach out and check out the exhibition on the upper floor that we brought from Kyiv to Berlin. It shows why recovery is needed and how Russia is targeting specifically Ukrainian culture and heritage.
📢 The new Київ Media Hub is here 🇺🇦 We are thrilled to launch a vibrant community space in #Kyiv where #UkrainianJournalists can (net)work, bond, and grow together 📰 📻 📡 The #КиївMediaHub will foster a strong, united media community through: 👉 A co-working space with electricity and shelter 👉 Networking and collaboration opportunities with media professionals and civil society 👉 Professional development and training 👉 Events, gatherings, and more Supported UNESCO, the #PeopleOfJapan and the Auswärtiges Amt (Federal Foreign Office) Germany, we opened the hub as a response to the immense challenges faced by media professionals in Ukraine since the full-scale invasion. If you are a media professional from Ukraine, come join us in Kyiv and be part of a resilient, growing community. Together, we are stronger. 🇺🇦#HannahArendtInitiative

Today, on #WorldPressFreedomDay 🌍🖋️ we stand in solidarity with #journalists and #mediamakers globally, particularly those from conflict and crisis zones where freedom of the #press is too often curtailed. In nations like #Afghanistan, #Belarus, #Gaza, #Libya, #Myanmar, #Russia, #Sudan and #Ukraine journalists continue to face harassment, threats, and violence. They urgently need support to continue their important work freely and safely. Since 2022 and through the MICT - Media in Cooperation and Transition Fellowship for Critical Voices, we have supported 570 journalists and media makers with stipends 💶 professional training 🧑🏫 security software 🛡️ mental health counselling 🛡️ language courses 💬 equipment and legal advice ⚖️, so they can continue shedding light on the shadows, using their voices freely. Today, we call everyone to recognize the importance #pressfreedom, support #journalistsindistress, and advocate for the rights that enable societies to thrive. #HannahArendtInitiative
