Innovative Materialien für eine nachhaltige Zukunft
Info

Turning waste into battery #materials Welcome and congratulations to Zineb Kassab 😊 - the Moroccon professor won a Max Planck Africa Mobility Grant and joined #mpisusmat to develop sodium-ion batteries made from agricultural #waste biomass. Zineb: “We want to use this under-valorized biomass and waste to produce hard carbon material, which can be used as an anode material for sodium-ion batteries. These batteries are a promising alternative to lithium-ion batteries but currently rely on #fossil fuel-derived hard #carbon , making them unsustainable.” https://lnkd.in/dW6EZsAH #materialsscience #recycling #wastemanagement #upcycling

Exploring #sustainable manufacturing and processing paths, liquid gases like #nitrogen and #hydrogen are becoming increasingly important. However, transporting and storing these gases remains challenging and costly due to embrittlement effects. Currently used #steels are expensive due to their high nickel content. A research team, including scientists from #mpisusmat , has designed a new steel that withstands ultralow temperatures while exhibiting high strength and ductility. Their findings were recently published in the Science Magazine. Image of the month: Density profile showing Na ions at a solid #liquid interface and their respective solvation shells formed by #water molecules. Understanding such electric double layer features is essential for controlling, e.g., performance in #electrochemical #energy storage devices, electro #catalysis , but also processes in #biology. Thanks to Zhenyu Wang for providing this fascinating image 😊 #materialsscience #mpisusmat #research #sustainability

The #hydrogen economy is dependent on storage and transport infrastructure. But what if hydrogen itself poses a risk to such infrastructure? Guillaume Hachet was awarded with an Alexander von Humboldt Foundation scholarship to continue his research at MPI SuSMat on how to mitigate hydrogen embrittlement. His approach is to first localize hydrogen in materials at the atomic scale and then use interstitial solutes like boron or carbon as protective layers against the hydrogen. Precisely controlling these interstitial solutes is key to designing new steels more resilient to hydrogen embrittlement. Image of the month: The transmission electron microscopy image shows the cross-section of a single crystal, ordered-FeAl microparticle obtained by dewetting of thin film on sapphire after annealing treatment. This is a novel method to expedite the composition-property characterization - a key step in #alloy development. Thanks to Dipali Sonawane for the beautiful image 😊 #materialsscience #mpie #research

#Recycling plastic is a necessity, but right now only 12% of the plastic we use gets recycled. The main problem is, that the common technique of melting and re-extrusion produces lower quality material. Join our lecture with Ina Vollmer, assistant professor at Universiteit Utrecht, who gives insights in alternative recycling methods using heterogenous #catalysts. In the lecture, she will mainly focus on the investigation of polymer conversion in a mechano-chemical ball mill reactor which allows us to achieve conversion at room temperature instead of the more than 500 °C used in the state-of-the-art pyrolysis process. The hybrid lecture takes place at the institute and via Zoom on 27th June 11am (CET). It is part of the MPI SusMat colloquia series. How can #machine-learning improve #green steel production? We are excited to welcome Baptiste Bienvenu to MPI SusMat, where he will explore this question with a #scholarship awarded by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. The formation of microstructures and defects during hydrogen-based direct reduction hugely influences the materials properties. Yet they are not fully understood at the atomic scale. In close collaboration with the experimental groups at MPI SusMat, Bienvenu develops a machine-learning interatomic potential to identify and overcome barriers in industrial green steel-making implementation.
