At MMS, health and safety on board is our forte. Preventing enclosed space accidents, which is often a cause of several casualties and extreme injuries, could not only change the way our seafarers face each day, but help them feel safer to take on their daily duties. Enclosed space accidents occur mainly when the ship’s crew enter a confined space that is not properly gas-freed and has several pockets of toxic/flammable gasses. For seafarers to be extremely cautious when entering enclosed spaces, they need to be well-informed about the risks involved. Our team of experts at MMS assist your crew in such matters by providing training sessions on what enclosed spaces are, where they are found on ships, and why they are dangerous. Visual aids and in-person demonstrations help show how quickly oxygen levels can drop, as well as the effects of toxic gasses. Get in touch – let’s keep your crew safe and healthy on their journey. Man-overboard situations is always dangerous and pose an immediate risk for life - it’s about losing visibility, drowning, and hypothermia, to mention some points. While the crew is trained to deal with bad weather and heavy sea, it happens, by different causes. As medical experts, we must help prevent seafarers from falling overboard by addressing both the physical and psychological factors that contribute to these accidents. Preventative health care, risk assessments and promoting safe practices on board could minimise the risk of man-overboard situation – and save lifes! Through medical examinations to assess the seafarer’s physical fitness and mobility, fatigue management, enhancing balance coordination and strength, and managing mental health issues like stress, depression, and anxiety, we can avoid dangerous accidents on board. It’s about immediate and appropriate management and care-taking if a seafarer has fallen overboard, and if rescued. A possible reason for serious injuries and death on board a vessel is mooring operations, which are considered to be one of the most dangerous tasks for seafarers, as they involve securing a vessel to a dock or quay using heavy ropes, wires, and chains. Requiring precision, teamwork, and constant awareness of hazards, as the forces involved can be unpredictable and immense, it’s important to be aware of the dangers associated with the activity which requires proper skills and knowledge. Regular risk assessments and improvements in mooring technology can further help mitigate the dangers and protect seafarers from injury and death. Medical experts play a crucial role in preventing accidents and injuries during mooring operations on board by contributing to both the physical and mental well-being of the crew, improving safety standards, and fostering a culture of health and fitness. As we celebrate Global Diversity Month in October, we remind ourselves that due to the nature of their work, seafarers visit many ports in different parts of the world and are thus possibly exposed to various pandemic and epidemic diseases such as malaria, cholera, yellow fever, and tuberculosis, amongst others. Seafarers need to know the importance of vaccinations and sometimes simple preventative measures as well to protect themselves from infectious diseases. Following hygiene and sanitation protocols, maintaining prevention (e.g. avoiding Mosquito bites by using long-sleeve-clothes and protecting sprays), social distancing on board, using personal protective equipment (PPE), and limiting shore leave and contact with outsiders when needed could prevent a sudden outburst of new diseases. Shoreside organisations are asked to provide orientation, recommendations, material, medication, and support. Let the team at MMS assist both ashore and on board with the above. Helping your crew take proactive steps is essential in maintaining a healthy, safe ship environment, and ensuring the continuity of operations at sea. Cardiovascular disease is commonly found in the seafaring community. Due to the unique challenges of life at sea, including long periods of isolation, irregular working hours, stress, limited access to healthcare and lifestyle factors, cardiovascular disease remains a significant concern on board. Factors such as poor nutrition, a lack of exercise, irregular sleep patterns, stress and mental health challenges all contribute to the health and well-being of our seafarers, along with smoking, and weight gain. However preventative measures can be taken such as health monitoring and medical check-ups to monitor risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, and control of the body mass index (BMI). Mental health support, promotion of healthy eating programmes, and education and awareness could help seafarers change their lifestyles and empower them to take control of their health. Let MMS provide you with the correct knowledge and training to help keep your crew healthy, both physically and mentally. Together, we can keep your journey smooth sailing from beginning to end. We are happy to announce that thanks to the proactive health measures which we have been taking at Marine Medical Solutions, as a member of OneCare Group, a comprehensive health and well-being platform, there is a noticeable decrease in emergency medical disembarkation on board Columbia Shipmanagement-managed vessels. Our CEO and Founder, Dr. Jens Tülsner, M.D. , emphasised the importance of early intervention. “Early medical intervention significantly improves outcomes and prevents complications,” he shared, adding, “We strongly encourage seafarers to seek timely medical assistance to avoid severe health issues and unnecessary evacuations.” Read more at: https://lnkd.in/dhFiCtkn #MarineMedicalSolutions #OneCareGroup #ColumbiaShipmanagement #ColumbiaGroup #Maritime #Shipping #Health #Wellbeing

Dealing with extreme temperatures on board a vessel can be challenging. Hot summer months and humidity can cause heat stroke, headache, and exhaustion and may lead to a variety of illnesses and even dangerous incidents. It’s about personal behaviour and precautionary measures to stand the work in hot environments, starting with appropriate, adjusted fluid intake, as well as rest and modifying your working conditions. Make sure your crew and visitors are protected at all times with our help. Together we can sail safely. Want to find out more?
