Big News: Link11 recently defended the biggest publicly known Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attack in Europe and one of the biggest attacks ever recorded in in our own network. Last week, our team successfully mitigated an assault that peaked at a staggering 1.4 Tb/s with 120 million packets per second, targeting one of our customers. While the sheer scale of this attack is impressive, it's crucial to understand the potential consequences had it not been mitigated. The attack was utilizing multiple vectors including TCP, UDP, ICMP, and GRE protocols. This multipronged approach was designed to exploit various vulnerabilities simultaneously, which could make a defense particularly challenging. This multi-vector attack lasted 20 minutes and involved 859,756 unique IP addresses, likely compiled of compromised IoT devices and home routers. The cybercriminals behind this attack employed a creative strategy, utilizing both large and small packets to simultaneously test bandwidth limits and CPU capacities. The attackers demonstrated an advanced understanding of network vulnerabilities by cleverly varying their packet sizes, with a notable decrease after about 4 minutes, followed by a rapid increase for TCP and UDP vectors, and a slight increase for GRE vectors. This attack primarily targeted common internet service protocols and ports through illegitimate web-based traffic connections. Despite its apparent simplicity, the sheer volume of the attack demonstrates that these types of 'unsophisticated' volumetric and protocol-based attacks remain a popular strategy among cybercriminals. They're relatively easy to generate, and attackers know that most targets lack the capacity to handle such massive traffic influxes. Had this attack been successful, it could have completely exhausted both the network capacity and server CPU of the target, leading to a total shutdown of digital business operations. For our client, this would have resulted in substantial revenue loss and a severe blow to customer trust. Link11's success in neutralizing this threat stems from our advanced, AI-driven mitigation strategies. 12 of our distributed scrubbing centers worked in tandem to filter out malicious traffic while allowing legitimate users uninterrupted access. This approach was crucial in handling an attack of this magnitude, as it prevented any single point of failure. As cyber threats continue to evolve, so must our defenses.
