The design strategy for the Bezirksamt Wandsbek in Hamburg ensures that the majority of solutions are based on ‘design for disassembly’ principles. The strategy, encouragingly supported by the client Sprinkenhof GmbH, prioritizes mechanical fixture, thus securing both integrated flexibility and easy exchange or disassembly of individual parts. Besides enhancing the quality of architectural detailing, the design for disassembly strategy enables future re-use of materials and is both resource and cost conscious. Similar design and material strategies can be found in the building’s interior. Separating walls are fixed in a system that allows for future changes in office configurations just as most technical installations are left visible. The latter saves material resources and allows for easy maintenance and future replacement supporting the design for disassembly approach. The interior material palette includes natural materials such as acoustic regulation made from seagrass, acoustic curtains from reused plastic and suspended wood ceilings and exposed construction. The goal is to leave all interior walls without paint, using clay plaster where coating is needed. Finalizing the detailing is in full progress, working with knippershelbig, Planungsgruppe M M AG, Moll Akustik and ZWP Ingenieur-AG on the last bits of the technical design.
