INSIGHTS: Today, we will highlight the fully glazed, double-curved #gridshell covering the interior courtyard of Villers-Cotterêts, located 80km NE of Paris.   Initially proposed as an optional add-on to the entire #renovation project under the guidance of architect Olivier Weets, the glazed grid shell has ultimately become an emblematic symbol of the historic French castle. The #shell #structure, consisting of single-curved, rectangular hollow steel beam elements with massive, milled steel nodes, was realized by Eiffage Métal and has been #prefabricated and #preassembled in a workshop in Portugal. The connections between the steel beam elements and the nodes are partly welded in the shop prior to shipping and partly bolted on site. INSIGHTS: In celebration of French national holiday, we will present three projects from France in the next days. First up, a new #structural #glass construction for a #rooftop bar, club and restaurant on top of an existing building in Paris. This special glass construction at the 15th/16th floor comprises structural glazing, curved skylights and mirror-like glass kaleidoscopes. It was designed by Studio Other Spaces and realized by FRENER & REIFER as façade contractor; knippershelbig was responsible for the structural design in the construction phase (EXE). The project was part of the renovation and conversion of the former prefecture at the Boulevard Morland, designed by David Chipperfield Architects, BRS and CALQ. The envelope of the 16th floor consists of two-side supported, large SG-bonded IGUs with variable ceramic frit and reflective mirror-coating. No mullions are used for the full glass facades. The ceiling above is assembled from the “kaleidoscope”-modules comprising suspended mirror-glass sheets that confusingly blur the boundaries between inside and the outside. Each of the 32 kaleidoscope-boxes is covered by a 2x2m large double-curved insulating glass unit. A particular challenge was to absorb the large deflections of the existing building within the glass structure and to achieve high transparency combined with perfect mirror effects. ARTICLE: The 'Kaltensteinhalle', designed by Dietrich | Untertrifaller with structural engineering by knippershelbig, has been awarded the prestigious #HugoHäring Prize.   The Bund Deutscher Architektinnen und Architekten BDA Baden-Württemberg awards this prize every three years for outstanding buildings. Last week, the Hugo Häring plaque was affixed in the entrance area of the Kaltensteinhalle in Vaihingen an der Enz. PROJECT: Since 2017, we have been involved in the #ConcertHall Munich project. Initially, we participated in the competition alongside Cukrowicz Nachbaur Architekten ZT GmbH. Subsequently, we progressed through numerous concept studies, up to detailed planning, structural analysis, and detailing, all within an exceptionally skilled team of far over 100 planners. On June 22, 2024, Dr. Markus Söder announced the termination and complete redesign of this cultural project. The ambition was often to match the quality of the concert halls in Hamburg or Berlin. Whether this can be achieved with “half the price” and a “design-build general contractor” – as stated - is yet to be seen, but it seems like a daunting challenge. In any case, we will fondly remember the incredible team spirit and the many wonderful people we had the pleasure of meeting during this project! Thanks for the great teamwork! PROJECT: 3-2-1-go! The urban transformation project #LOVT in Munich, designed by GRAFT Architects, is underway! Last week, we visited the construction site in Munich and are happy to share the first snapshots and milestones of this ambitious project.   ✔️ The necessary partial demolition of the two northern building sections in LOVT Vision is complete. Excavation and shoring can now begin. ✔️ The upper existing floors of LOVT Vision have now been removed.   A key facet of the project is the respect for the existing structure and the sustainable refurbishment of existing buildings, along with the addition of future-oriented architecture and new green outdoor spaces. Our scope of work includes #structuralengineering and #façadeengineering.    We are looking forward to the next steps! Thank you very much for the great teamwork! ARTICLE: ‘One must take a closer look to understand the methods used to create the remarkable liveliness and lightness of the facade of the approximately 84-meter-high tower.’ We are happy to see the double-skin #façade of the office tower, designed by allmannwappner gmbh, featured in the current issue of #Bauwelt. The recently completed tower is located in Berlin’s new city district “European Quarter,” and knippershelbig was responsible for the #façadeengineering. PROJECT: Today, we want to share insights into the double-skin #façade of the recently completed Voltair project in Berlin, designed by J. MAYER H. UND PARTNER, ARCHITEKTEN.   This new urban building block, located in the heart of #Berlin near Alexanderplatz, blends office spaces, innovative co-working areas, and interactive meeting zones. Its volume is divided into multiple cubes, each tailored to specific uses.   A special part of the façade design was the development of the large, laminated safety glass with dimensions of up to 2.7 m x 5.1 m without mechanical fixation. The fall-proof safety panes of the double facade of the "VoltAir" project in Berlin are made of laminated safety glass with structural silicone. According to German building regulation, various tests were required, including the determination of the material parameters of the highly loaded, 28 mm wide SG bonding.
