👨🔬 300M! 👩🔬   🔝 That was the price for the first human genome sequence generation from the Human Genome Project. Trying to save Nature, Science and our Psychology - 🧠💚

Gloves were introduced in 1890 for a single nurse 👀❗ 🧤 Today, we all use them. But which is healthier: Vinyl, Latex, or Nitrile?   Although we are rarely educated on this topic, knowing the differences between gloves is crucial for our health.   🌳 Material: In essence, all these gloves are polymers made from plastics or rubber.   Vinyl Gloves: Made from PVC with plasticizers  Latex Gloves: Made from natural rubber latex (polyisoprene)  Nitrile Gloves: Made from synthetic nitrile rubber (acrylonitrile and butadiene)   ➡ Key Properties: Vinyl gloves were primarily used because of their low cost when resources are scarce. As they are the least durable, less flexible, and are not biodegradable they are less common nowadays. (Transparent glove on the right of the thumbnail)   Latex gloves are made from organic rubber - offering the best fit and tactile sensitivity. Due to their organic source, they contain proteins, lipids, and other organic compounds. These proteins are the ones triggering allergic reactions most commonly. (White glove on the thumbnail).    As a result, nitrile gloves have significantly gained traction. They offer high chemical and puncture resistance and do not commonly cause allergies. Their fit and feel is somewhat lower than those of latex gloves. (Blue gloves on the thumbnail).    👩⚕️ Health Concerns: Breakthrough Time and Permeation Rate are key measures to define the “resistance” of gloves.   The most important question: “How long can you wear your gloves safely?”  Unfortunately this is extremely difficult to answer. This is why few people talk about it.   A)  the type of glove matters (e.g., nitrile better than vinyl). B) the thickness (measured in Mils) does too. C) The longer you wear your gloves, the less resistant they become due to the heat from your body and movement. This effect can range in the double-digit percentage range after wearing them for a few hours!   On average, most gloves are resistant to common chemicals for at least a few minutes. ✅ Nevertheless, differences are enormous: some commonly used gloves protect against ethanol for 8 min, others for 66 min; some protect against chloroform for 2 min, others for 8 min.   👉 Takeaway: If you spill a toxic chemical on your glove, there’s no need to panic as your gloves will protect you for a few minutes on average. However, once you safely can, change them.   Although latex gloves can be the most sustainable option and can be composted since they are biodegradable, very few gloves are properly recycled. On top, they contain toxic additives, production is often problematic – therefore, reducing is the best option.   To be more sustainable, make sure to reuse gloves if feasible, and opt for lighter ones as long as you do not need additional protection.   ❣ To my mind, we need to share education on this topic to protect our planes and health properly! #science #research #safety #health #EHS #gloves #information #education #tips Graphic by cpetpeglove
