⏰Tomorrow, 17 July, at 10am, Berlin: Join us in front of the Chancellery to protest against the cuts for humanitarian aid and development cooperation! Together with The ONE Campaign and VENRO we are part of the protest. It's time for action! Because, this week, the cabinet will approve the budget for 2025 and also the planned cuts in the humanitarian sector. The federal budget for development cooperation has already been decreased this year. And now further massive #cuts are being discussed for 2025. We firmly reject these! That is why we are joining forces on 17 July in front of the Chancellery to fight for a strong budget for development cooperation and #humanitarian aid. In the arid north of #Kenya, which is characterized by livestock farming, Johanniter and its local partner Mid-P have created and expanded #schoolgardens in 7 schools. 👉🏾Two schools that have only recently joined the project have now received important materials such as fences, water tanks, spades, wheelbarrows and watering cans. They can now start #planting their school gardens. 👉🏾Other schools are already further along and have harvested their first cabbage, onions and other vegetables. The pupils are learning about farming and growing vegetables and are able to pass on their knowledge to their families. 💡In this way, the knowledge and skills spread throughout the region and enable families to secure a healthy diet.

Background: Although the civil war officially ended in 2002, ongoing conflicts have internally displaced more than 6.9 million people. The situation in the eastern Congolese city of Goma has worsened dramatically. There has been heavy fighting between the Congolese army and the M23 rebels for months. Adolescent girls and women among displaced and host communities are the ones most exposed to sexual and gender-based violence (#SGBV) in the current crisis in the eastern part of the DR of Congo 🇨🇩.   Johanniter delivers front-line and survivor focused holistic emergency assistance in the province North Kivu. We also improve and maintain the mental health and psychosocial well-being of SGBV survivors and built local capacities.   So we empower so called “frontline workers” who are embedded in the communities, to ensure the survivors of gender-based violence receive the care and support they need. Young women and adolescent girls come together in “Girl Shine” groups, where they learn about GBV and encourage other young women and girls to bring awareness to their communities.   We are thankful to Auswärtiges Amt (Federal Foreign Office) Germany for supporting our holistic SGBV services for local communities in the Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. German Commissioner for Human Rights Policy and Humanitarian Assistance, Luise Amtsberg is currently in the DRC.
