🤖 Generative AI can be a powerful supporting human creativity – fueling the generation, development, and refinement of innovative ideas. But how do ideas generated by AI compare against ideas generated by human experts. Are there meaningful differences in the kinds of ideas produced? Does either have a specific (dis-)advantage regarding common criteria of idea quality such as novelty or feasibility? Is one outperforming the other? 🔎 At the Innov8rs.co Conference in Milan, ITONICS - The Innovation OS had the great opportunity to run a small-scale experiment and shed some light on the questions above. In a 90-min workshop, we pitted our Smart Ideation Engine against 30 experts from the fields of innovation and technology management in a battle of wits and creativity. The human experts were divided into groups, each group selecting for itself a challenge topic for which ideas were generated. In parallel, humans and AI developed ideas in response to these topics. After that, all ideas were evaluated by the human experts – without knowing the origin of the idea, i.e., whether it was a product of human or AI’s creativity. 💡 My key takeaways from the experiment are the following: 1️⃣ There were no obvious differences in content, description, and thematic focus between humans and AI. As a small side bet, we asked some of the human experts to guess which ideas were generated by humans and which by the AI. The hit rate was not higher than the expectancy value of a random choice – it was not possible to confidently distinguish AI- versus human-generated ideas. 2️⃣ There was no clear winner of the challenge, both humans and AI produced high-quality ideas, in some topic areas the humans ranked higher, in some the AI – the comparative edge often was quite small. For me, this implies that using AI in idea generation can benefit innovation teams by providing a time-efficient way to broaden their horizon, extending the scope of their ideation efforts, and validating the thematic focus of the ideas generated (e.g., does AI come up with ideas that we did not consider)? 3️⃣ Even with limited information provided (just the title of the challenge topic), our AI was able to come up with ideas of equal and sometimes even better quality than their human counterparts. This points to a great potential for employing AI also in latter stages of the ideation process when more information and context can be provided. Here, the AI can help by suggesting interesting additions or application fields, refining business cases and action plans, and enhance or automate work steps in idea formulation and validation. 👇 Interested in how the experiment played out in detail?
