Plasma technology for recyclable barrier plastic packaging
Info
IonKraft is a spin-off from the Institute for Plastics Processing (IKV) at RWTH Aachen University in Germany and is funded by the EIC Accelerator program of the European Innovation Council. Our mission is to make all plastic packaging recyclable and free of Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) with the help of plasma coating technology. A high barrier effect against gases, solvents and other substances is necessary to guarantee sufficient product protection in many industries. Since common and inexpensive packaging plastics only provide a limited sealing effect, an additional barrier must be added. Widely used barrier technologies like multi-plastic structures or fluorination compromise sustainability over barrier function. We offer a game-changing barrier coating technology for plastic containers, that provides perfect product protection, while being fluorine-free and fully recyclable. Our company is deeply rooted in science and innovation is in our DNA. Our company purpose expresses what unites us all at IonKraft: Pioneers at heart striving to push a circular economy for plastics forward for future generations.

As part of our Impact Report series, we'd like to introduce you to Dr. Montgomery Jaritz and Benedikt Heuer, co-founders and managing directors of IonKraft. 🤝 IonKraft has developed an alternative to multi-layer packaging, which will eventually be banned or taxed to comply with the EU Green Deal. Their plasma-based coating enables packaging manufacturers to create mono-material packaging that performs as well as multi-layer packaging. With Monty and Bene, we talked about the importance of having the right momentum as a founder; to bring an invention to the market at just the right time. We still cannot believe what happened yesterday: We pitched at Stage Two, the largest European competition for startups from leading universities. All 50 teams were highly skilled, did fantastic presentations, and shared their visions of how to change the world for the better.🌍 We were astonished and super excited when we received five different awards from different juries:🏆 100k Investment Award from Earlybird Venture Capital 250k Investment Award from STS Ventures GmbH 800k Investment Award from HTGF | High-Tech Gründerfonds StageTwo Innovation Award from Siemens - 20k cash! Skilling Award from McKinsey & Company This remarkable success propels us towards new opportunities for growth, partnerships, and turning our vision of a circular economy in packaging into reality.🚀 Aside from the pitches and prizes, we listened to an encouraging keynote from Heike Freund and made new connections with inspiring entrepreneurs.🌟 A big shout-out and thank you to Malte Brettel, Prof. Dr. Stephan Stubner, Marius Rosenberg, Lukas Ellmann, and the whole Stage Two Team, for organizing such an incredible event. 🙏🏼 #forourbeyond #IonKraft #CircularEconomy #PitchCompetition #SuccessStory 🚀
