This short #video shows some of the best experimental results (by Johannes Oswald from IRS at the University of Stuttgart https://lnkd.in/gfZu6Dq8) achieved within the #meesst (#MHD Enhanced Entry System for #Space #Transportation) project in #plasma wind tunnel #tests at the IRS's PWK1 facility. MEESST, a project involving 10 international organizations from 6 countries and a total of ~30 scientists/engineers, is funded by the #European #Innovation Council's Pathfinder program and coordinated by me at #kuleuven. Magnetic shielding applied to our experimental probe was able to detach the shock wave, considerably reducing the total surface heating in both Lunar and interplanetary reentry conditions. The #magnetic field is generated by a cryocooled magnet made of high-temperature #superconductors. This previously "Sci-Fi" #technology, now more than ever, can be considered a potential game-changer for current and #future space entry #systems, complementary/alternative to heat shields made of #thermal protection #materials. More details about this disruptive technology will be presented tomorrow at the International Cryogenic Engineering Conference / International Cryogenic Material Conference (ICEC/ICME) in Geneva, by fellow MEESST team members Matthieu Dalban Canassy and Sonja Schlachter. #moon #lunar #interplanetary #spaceexploration #reentry #scifi #EUeic #spacetech #futuretech #spacetechnology #futuretechnology #emergingtechnology #sciencetechnology #spacescience #plasmaphysics
