I was so happy that Lars Murray asked me to be on his Unlimited Supply podcast as an Axegrinder contributer, because boy do I have a lot to say about gaming and the future of music! It's a super short podcast - 4 minutes all in - as all Unlimited Supply episodes are meant to be. Take a listen and let me know if you agree with me on this. #AI #AImusic #gaming #musictech https://lnkd.in/gjjxZzKZ

A huge THANK YOU to the wonderful team at Wallifornia and LeanSquare for a truly inspiring and productive week at the Wallifornia Music Tech conference! We were in the accelerator cohort this year. Thierry Gieseler whipped our presentation into shape during the online sessions throughout June. It must have worked because we have a LOT of business to follow up on now after our onstage pitch during Demo Day. =) We love these small but mighty music tech conferences. Less running around, more time with people, and genuine relationships form. #musictech #AImusic #gaming #wallifornia #gamemusic

Fellow startups! Music Tectonics is taking applications for the next Swimming with Narwhals pitch competition. We were a finalist and had a great experience. It's a very supportive pitch environment and investors do show up to this. Finalists get to demo at the pre-conference cocktail party at the Music Tectonics conference in October. https://lnkd.in/gZRknaD6 #startups #musictech

Our CEO just posted her thoughts on Twitch's new program to take a cut of channel revenue to pay rightsholders on DJ livestreams. This is a huge step for Twitch and the music industry. Right now it's limited to DJ channels, but we can see this going sitewide. Infinite Album's music is not subject to this program, because: 1 - Most of our music is our own 2 - What is trained on artist music is under a direct deal with that artist 3 - We make NEW music, note to note, infinitely, so we should never be exactly replicating released music So gamers are good to go with lives, clips, highlights, and VODs of Infinite Album music, on every livestream platform. #livestream #Twitch #twitchmusic
Let's talk about Twitch's new DJ Program because it's a huge step for the music industry. WHAT IT IS * Twitch will take "a portion of earnings" from monetized channels that DJ (explicitly for DJs, not just any play of commercially released music) to pay rightsholders, presumably sound recording rightsholders because they've been paying publishers through PROs for years. * They will use listening services (Audible Magic, by my knowledge) to identify which songs are getting played. * This is for live-live only, not VODs/clips/recordings of lives. * Valid only for songs on labels where they have deals: the majors, Merlin, "100s of others". Up to the streamer to cross reference their playlist with Twitch's approved song list. * Twitch will share the music licensing cost with the streamer 50/50 (in most cases) and subsidize 100% for the first year. Launch is July/Aug 2024. Pros: * Fucking finally. A rev share on channels using copyrighted material has been standard on every other content site on the internet for the last like 15 years. Twitch knows exactly what gets played on exactly which channels to exactly how many people (and if they have any blind spots then there are plenty of 3rd party Twitch data sources that can tell them) and exactly how much those channels make. No excuses for not paying. * Twitch will pay 100% for non-monetized channels. This will give baby channels time to grow. Cons: * Twitch is not saying what the cut is from the channel revenue to the rightsholder because they are prohibited, which is just crazy. Mixcloud pays rightsholders and tells streamers exactly how much. Twitch streamers have no idea. Nice of Twitch to soften the blow, but if they're not saying then you know it's going to be a good-sized chunk. It's really bad politics with their users and I'd have pushed back hard on that in the rightsholder negotiations. Observations: * I can see this going sitewide to all channels. I bet limiting to DJs is a "pilot." * To my knowledge, Twitch does not report which songs get played (including covers) to PROs, so there's no attribution for songwriter payouts. Maybe that changes with the DJ program but there are LOADS, as in the majority, of other channels that play music on Twitch and those PRO payments just get blackboxed. * They should have an sign-up / opt-in for labels and even indie artists who want to join this payout program. Coordinate that with the big indie distributors. * If I had a product that could cross reference playlists on DJ software with a given database of songs (Twitch's), I'd be pitching the crap out of Twitch now on it or creating a product for DJs directly. Twitch is usually slow to do this sort of last mile dev and since they didn't announce, I assume it's not built. * Twitch's "new" president, Daniel Clancy, is very much a music guy and I'm not at all surprised to see this come to be under his watch. #twitch #twitchmusic #livestreaming https://lnkd.in/gW_WFkPm
