🏙️ Coastal cities, the frontline in the battle against climate change, are currently grappling with the urgent issue of rising seas and severe storms. But are they sufficiently prepared? A recent study uncovers some critical realities that demand immediate attention. Coastal cities worldwide are making strides in climate adaptation—but it's not all good news. While wealthy cities are fortifying their defences, many low-income regions are left relying on individual efforts, often with minimal support. The focus is primarily on today's challenges, with little attention to what tomorrow might bring. The study underscores troubling inequality. Coastal adaptation is not just about sandbags and seawalls; it's about ensuring equitable access to necessary resources. Without a proactive, future-focused strategy, these cities risk being overwhelmed as climate impacts escalate. What can we do? Investing in transformative adaptation strategies, improving data collection in underrepresented areas, and fostering global cooperation, which is crucial in this global issue, can significantly and positively impact. Let's not wait for the next disaster to occur. 🌊The sea is rising, and so must our efforts. 🌱 🇺🇸 Ever wondered how to get people from all sides on climate action? A new psychology study might have the answer. According to research from NYU, framing climate action as a way to protect and preserve our beloved "way of life" can unite both liberals and conservatives. Rather than focusing on doomsday scenarios or radical changes, this approach emphasizes safeguarding cherished cultural traditions. Katherine Mason suggests that highlighting climate action as a patriotic duty can boost climate awareness and motivate people across the political spectrum. The study, involving 50,000 participants from 60 countries, shows that this messaging resonated with Americans and had varied effects internationally. While it worked well in the US, its impact was mixed elsewhere, highlighting the need for tailored communication strategies. What's the takeaway? Framing climate change as preserving values we all hold dear might be the key to a united front. SOURCE: Katherine A. Mason, Madalina Vlasceanu, John T. Jost. Effects of system-sanctioned framing on climate awareness and environmental action in the United States and beyond. Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 2024; 121 (38) DOI: 10.1073/pnas.2405973121

❌💧 Water conflicts are surging alarmingly, reaching a record high in 2023. According to the Pacific Institute, there were nearly 350 water-related conflicts worldwide last year—a staggering 150% increase from 2022. To put it in perspective, there were only 22 in 2000. Why the surge? It's a cocktail of factors—fierce disputes over control, the ever-growing need for water, and the harsh reality of climate change. These tensions are playing out not just in one region but globally. From the Middle East to Southern Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, conflicts over access, control, and even weaponization of water have intensified, affecting us all. And it's not just a regional issue. Nearly 40% of these conflicts split across borders, magnifying their impact. In some of the worst cases, water itself became a weapon of war, like Russia cutting off water supplies in Ukraine or the shutdown of Gaza's last desalination plant. This sharp rise in conflict shows that current water policies aren't cutting it. We must act now, not tomorrow or next year, but today, before it's too late. 🤔 Consider this: what if the more you hear a claim, the more likely you are to believe it—even if you know it's not true? A recent study from The Australian National University has unearthed a surprising revelation: the power of repetition can sow seeds of doubt, even in the minds of staunch climate change believers. Here's the kicker—90% of study participants supported climate science. Yet, when exposed to repeated climate-sceptic claims, even they started to find those claims more believable. Why? The power of familiarity. It's like hearing a catchy tune on the radio until you can't get it out of your head. The same principle applies to misinformation. Even when we know better, that constant drumbeat of doubt can chip away at our confidence in the facts. And when climate-sceptic claims are given equal airtime under the guise of "balanced reporting," it only fuels the fire of misinformation. So, what's the key lesson here? Be conscious of what you echo. Share the truth—and make it resonate. Let's amplify the facts, not the falsehoods. Source: Yangxueqing Jiang, Norbert Schwarz, Katherine J. Reynolds, Eryn J. Newman. Repetition increases belief in climate-skeptical claims, even for climate science endorsers. PLOS ONE, 2024; 19 (8): e0307294 DOI: 10.1371/journal.pone.0307294 Norbert Schwarz
