🪖 Urgent and immediate attention is crucial to the environmental impact of global militaries, which are among the most significant carbon polluters on the planet. We must advocate for policy changes to address this issue, as their climate impact, which is often unreported, is of a monumental scale. Without these changes, the situation will only worsen. 🇺🇦 The ongoing war in Ukraine has led to a colossal and unprecedented environmental crisis. In just 24 months, the conflict produced a staggering 175 million tonnes of CO2. To put this into perspective, it's equivalent to the annual emissions of a highly industrialized country like The Netherlands or adding 90 million petrol cars to the road. The total climate damage the Russian Federation has caused after 24 months of the war when applying the Social Cost of Carbon of 185 USD/tCO2e, amounts to more than USD 32 billion. 🇵🇸 Recent research has highlighted the staggering carbon costs of the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict, revealing a facet of warfare often overlooked amidst the human tragedy. The first 60 days alone of this conflict produced emissions more significant than the annual output of 20 countries. Beyond the destruction, rebuilding Gaza will result in emissions comparable to the annual levels of countries like New Zealand. The environmental footprint of military operations is a critical but often overlooked contributor to global emissions, accounting for almost 5.5% of the total.
