📣 Calling cities to support multilevel climate action! At the #ICLEIWorldCongress 2024, a call to action deriving from this year’s Daring Cities Bonn Dialogues resonated loud and clear: Katja Dörner, Mayor of Bonn, Germany, called on urban leaders to proactively engage with their national governments and national associations of local governments to enhance NDCs by 2025 and support #COP28’s Coalition for High Ambition Multilevel Partnerships (CHAMP) initiative for Climate Action. National associations of local governments in Germany, Brazil, and the United States -led by #ICLEI leaders- have already pledged their support for #CHAMP; others, like Finland, are underway. They are all pioneering a global movement to push for stronger local involvement in national climate plans. “I invite urban leaders to replicate similar initiatives in your countries and share your progress with us at the annual Daring Cities Bonn Dialogues and report to UNFCCC,” urged Mayor Dörner, who serves as Chair of the Climate Action Governance Portfolio for the ICLEI Global Executive Committee, and as Vice President of the Association of German Cities. Read our blog 👉 https://lnkd.in/eAuWUF28 To get insights on how to implement CHAMP, join the #DaringCities Virtual Forum kick-off webinar, “CHAMP & Town Hall COPs: Connecting local climate action to national and global goals.” 🗓️ Tomorrow, 31 July ⏰ 16:00 UTC 2 🔗 Register now: https://lnkd.in/edSRESfc yunus Arikan, Barbara Buffaloe, Madison Hodges, Shelley Nania, Andrea Paoloni, Kale Roberts, Risto Veivo, Axel Grael #ClimateAction #LocalClimateAction #MultilevelAction

The #Amazon is a global #biodiversity hotspot and crucial climate regulator. Yet, its cities need financial support and capacity building to foster sustainable, conservation-oriented urban green spaces. In a dedicated session at ICLEI World Congress 2024, mayors from Amazonian cities united to amplify their voices and address #sustainability challenges. These cities, home to 72% of the Amazon's population, face unique hurdles in public administration, services, and connectivity. “Talking about the Amazon refers to a region that is an international brand known worldwide… [that] simultaneously suffers from systematic invisibility due to the lack of policies aimed at its development,” said Edmilson Rodrigues, Mayor of Belém, Brazil. #ICLEI South America is supporting Belém to create its first greenhouse gas inventory and promoting ecosystem-based adaptation. Our work with the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy (GCoM) and the Belém Declaration aims to institutionalize Amazonian cities as part of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization - ACTO. During the session, Mayors also emphasized the need for national and international cooperation for environmental projects and technical training to rebuild the Amazon, especially since deforestation and urban migration worsen environmental problems. Sustainable development projects, technical training, and adding value to natural resources are essential for a resilient future. "What unites us all is our commitment to pushing for climate action and an ambitious outcome at the upcoming COP29," reflects Anna Aaen, Deputy Mayor, City of Aalborg, Denmark. She represented the Local Governments and Municipal Authorities (LGMA) Constituency at the Copenhagen Climate Ministerial, held last March by Denmark in cooperation with the #COP28 and #COP29 Presidencies. The #CopenhagenClimateMinisterial, hosted by the city of Elsinore, gathered around 40 climate leaders and ministers worldwide to push for ambitious #ClimateAction toward COP29 Azerbaijan. Over 400 years ago, this historical city was the setting for Shakespeare's famous play about the Danish prince Hamlet and its iconic existential words, "To be, or not to be. That is the question." "We can still empathize with Hamlet's doubt and guilt about whether we are acting correctly and in time – particularly regarding the climate. We all share the responsibility to save our shared planet, especially those of us in the Western world. It is no longer a question of 'to do or not to do.' It is rather a question of 'how to do,'" writes Ms. Aaen. Read her insights from the Ministerial here 👉 https://lnkd.in/eUiR9qSk As co-focal point of the #LGMA Constituency, #ICLEI celebrates this significant meeting, underscoring the spirit of #MultilevelAction and multistakeholder collaboration, guided by the COP28 UAE Consensus. This consensus sets unprecedented climate goals, such as transitioning away from fossil fuels, to keep the 1.5°C target within reach. ICLEI Europe, Aalborg Kommune

“Earth is becoming hotter and more dangerous for everyone, everywhere,” said UN Secretary-General António Guterres. It is conservatively estimated that severe heat waves - caused by the #climatecrisis - kill nearly half a million people each year. These heat waves devastate economies, widen inequalities and undermine the collective effort to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals. 📊 Almost half a million heat-related deaths occurred annually between 2000 and 2019. In 2024 alone, over 80 million students faced school closures due to extreme heat. Heat exposure caused labor capacity losses worth US$863 billion in 2022, with over 70% of the global workforce at high risk, leading to millions of injuries and deaths each year. Without significant changes, global cooling capacity is set to triple by 2050, which will increase greenhouse gas emissions, thereby furthering the crisis. Today, the UN Secretary-General António Guterres launched a Call to Action on Extreme Heat, uniting ten specialized UN entities to tackle one of the most pressing challenges of our time. This unprecedented collaboration with FAO, International Labour Organization, United Nations OCHA, United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), UN Environment Programme, UNESCO, UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme), UNICEF, World Health Organization, and World Meteorological Organization highlights the multi-sectoral impacts of extreme heat on every aspect of our lives and our planet. The Call to Action focuses on four critical areas: 1. Caring for the vulnerable and protecting those most at risk. 2. Safeguarding workers, particularly those on the front lines of our economies. 3. Boosting resilience of economies and societies using data and science. 4. Limiting temperature rise to 1.5°C by phasing out fossil fuels and scaling up investment in renewable energy. Read more 👉 https://lnkd.in/duJnfmew As a global network of local governments dedicated to sustainability, #ICLEI stands in full support of this initiative. In June, we partnered with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies - IFRC for Heat Action Day 2024 under the motto #BeatTheHeat. The initiative aimed to raise awareness about the severe impacts of heatwaves, particularly on vulnerable urban populations, and promote simple actions to mitigate these risks.
