An EU Horizon Europe R&I project setting a new paradigm for edge computing in extreme environments
Info
i-EDGE is a project co-funded by the European Union (Horizon Europe programme), the Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI) and UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), which aims at developing complex Systems-on-Chip (SoC) based on nanoelectromechanical (NEM) switches for IoT devices operating in harsh environments. The market-oriented demonstrators developed within i-EDGE consist of non-volatile memory (NVM) blocks, field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) and sensors as well as power supply and data readout circuitry. Ultimately, the project envisions a monolithic integration of its technology on a commercially available CMOS foundry platform to fully utilize both the cost-effectiveness of conventional semiconductor manufacturing and the unique benefits of NEM switches in a single SoC. Given the very high energy efficiency and harsh-environment capability of the i-EDGE demonstrator systems (use at temperatures > 300 °C; absorbed-radiation doses up to 1 Mrad), i-EDGE will provide electronic solutions that unlock the full power of the IoT for industrial processing and manufacturing, electric vehicles, environmental monitoring as well as health care applications. The i-EDGE consortium comprises eight partners: AMO GmbH, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, TU WIEN Technische Universität Wien, Microchip Technology Nantes, CSEM, SCIPROM Sàrl, University of Bristol and Microchip Technology Caldicot.

We're excited to announce that #NEMSwitchTechnology, pioneered in ZeroAMP and i-EDGE project, has been featured on page 8 of the latest issue of "inno" magazine! "inno" is an international high-tech magazine for users of micro- and nanotechnology, photonics, MEMS, and advanced materials. Published three to four times a year by the IVAM Microtechnology Network, "Inno" highlights cutting-edge advancements and innovations in these fields. The latest issue is dedicated to: "Forward Horizons: Exploring Future Technologies“ Check out the feature to learn more about our groundbreaking work in NEM Switch Technology!

Excited about our latest results in NEM memory circuits, published in Electron Device Letters. This circuit is expected to form the basis for embedded non-volatile memory in FPGA circuits as well as stand-alone non-volatile memories for edge applications.
Professor of Electronic Engineering, Royal Academy of Engineering / Microchip Senior Research Chair in High-Temperature Electronics
Congratulations to Dr. MUKESH KUMAR KULSRESHATH, Qi Tang, Elliott Worsey and rest of team from University of Bristol and KTH Micro and Nanosystems (MST) for demonstration of first fully nanomechanical non-volatile memory cell! This work is published in IEEE Electron Device Letters https://lnkd.in/ezE7zVNp and can form the basis of harsh-environment capable, zero standby power non-volatile memories for edge applications.

Last month, the i-EDGE consortium organised its first webinar entitled “i-Edge” - a miniaturised rugged sensor/actuator platform - with Jens Bolten (from AMO GmbH), Dinesh Pamunuwa (Professor at the University of Bristol) and Piers Tremlett (Microchip Technology Caldicot Ltd.). This event gathered key industrial stakeholders to receive feedback and critical advice from our potential end-users regarding the platform device requirements for our innovative NEM switch technology. If you missed the webinar and would like to know more about the next-generation computing platform based on NEM relays to operate under harsh environments, check out the event webpage and download the presentation slides: https://lnkd.in/eJv-pU6v

i-EDGE was nicely represented at the AMO GmbH booth at #IEEESENSORS2023 in Vienna last week! As the successor of the ZeroAMP project, visitors had the chance to learn more about both projects by checking out roll-ups, flyers and more materials, as well as by discussing with the i-EDGE coordinator, Jens Bolten.
ZeroAMP and i-EDGE project at #IEEESENSORS2023 in Vienna! Don't miss the opportunity of visiting the booth of AMO GmbH and of having a chat with Jens Bolten to learn how the two projects intend to use nano-electromechanical switches (NEMS) to realize computing systems able to sustain very high temperatures and high radiation levels. 🚀 Electronics for extreme environments! 🛰

The i-EDGE team has just organised its first webinar entitled “i-Edge” - a miniaturised rugged sensor/actuator platform! During this event, which gathered key industrial stakeholders as potential customers for our innovative NEM switch technology, Prof. Dinesh Pamunuwa (University of Bristol), Piers Tremlett (Microchip Technology Caldicot Ltd) and Dr. Jens Bolten (AMO GmbH, i-EDGE coordinator) presented the technology developed within the project, as well as the plans for device realisation and its expected applications. The webinar was a nice opportunity to receive feedback and critical advice from our potential end-users regarding the platform device requirements, the functional circuit blocks to be included in our next wafer run etc. as part of an interactive round table discussion. Stay tuned for the next i-EDGE event! In the meantime, if you are interested in sensors, process control and asset tracking in harsh environments, visit our project website for more details on the technology and its exploitation paths: https://lnkd.in/eeivsjtY
