Last week, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency issued a notice about a large-scale spear-phishing campaign spreading Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) files, allowing attackers to connect to and access files stored on the target's network. This approach uses a single desktop to tap into the wider enterprise or even achieve persistent network access. Spear-phishing accounted for less than 0.1% of emails but led to 66% of successful breaches (Barracuda). While spear-phishing has been a favored attack vector for years, the influence of AI has made these attacks more effective, enabling the creation of convincing and personalized emails at an unprecedented scale.
