Hybrid Engine Development - HyEnD e.V.

Herstellung von Bauteilen für die Luft- und Raumfahrt

Student Group of the University of Stuttgart designing, building and launching hybrid rockets.

Info

"Hybrid Engine Development – HyEnD" is the boundary-pushing student rocketry team of the University of Stuttgart. With N2ORTH, HyEnD has developed one of the most powerful and advanced student-built hybrid rockets in the world. On Tuesday, 18th April 2023 N2ORTH reached an altitude of 64 km. This almost doubled the previous altitude record for student-built hybrids, which we established in 2016 with the HEROS 3 rocket.

We recently had the pleasure of being invited by our friends at WARR. During our visit, they showed us their test stand located on the university grounds. We engaged in fascinating discussions about their 3D-printed regeneratively-cooled combustion chamber and they showcased their recently launched rocket from the WESP project. Additionally, they provided insights into the current status of their biliquid rocket from the Nixus project. We were thrilled to visit them and look forward to more knowledge exchanges and collaborations in the future. Thank you for hosting us, WARR! We hope to see you again soon.

Last Thursday we had the amazing opportunity to display our projects and achievements at the #Stallwächter-Party, the last party of the Landesvertretung Baden-Württemberg in Berlin before summer break. As a central display piece we were able to hang up our record breaking N2ORTH rocket, which was truly a sight to behold. We had the opportunity to talk to leaders, politicians, company representatives, and even some astronauts! Thanks to Universität Stuttgart Universität Stuttgart - Institut für Raumfahrtsysteme (IRS) Small Satellite Student Society of the University of Stuttgart - KSat e.V. and IPV for a fun evening and great cooperation at our shared exhibition stand.

Part 2/3 This small solid rocket motor is used to characterize new solid propellants. Using the measured pressure of multiple burns with different throat sizes, one can determine the a and n parameters and thus the regression rate. The assembly starts by mounting the nozzle flange on the casing. Afterwards the nozzle assembly and propellant grain are inserted. Next, the pertinax bulkhead and ignitor can be placed, special attention is given to the cable as it has to be shorted at all times. Lastly the assembly is finished by screwing on the bulkhead. This assembly, except for the fuel grain can be reused at least two times, some parts more than 10 times. This allows for quick and easy testing of multiple grains. Part 1/3 A few weeks ago, we manufactured four fuel grains to evaluate a potential new solid propellant. These grains are based on the propellant "TM-78," developed by chemist Dr. Siegfried Oeckl, and have been improved in terms of pourability, safety, and regression for larger sustainer engines. Notable modifications include a higher binder ratio, larger sodium nitrate particle size, and the addition of a flexibilizer to prevent propellant cracking. Each grain is composed of 500 grams of the new TM-78HP propellant and will be tested in a small characterization motor at the MPA (Materials Testing Institute) of the University of Stuttgart. Stay tuned for part 2🔥 ——————————————— Song: Rameses B & Veela - Never Knew Me [NCS Release] Music provided by NoCopyrightSounds Free Download/Stream: http://ncs.io/NKM Watch: https://buff.ly/3L5uTQC

We are honored to announce our newest sponsor TANIQ providing us with their powerful filament winding software TaniqWind Pro. This will aid us in the development and manufacture of composite overwrapped pressure vessels, such as propellant tanks and engine casings for our future projects. Keep an eye out for posts showing their software in use🚀 For more information about Taniq, please visit their website at https://www.taniq.com/

We recently attended the annual BVSR conference in Friedrichshafen, and it was a fantastic experience filled with insightful discussions, valuable exchanges, and engaging workshops. The conference featured a series of compelling lectures and exciting visits to Airbus Defence and Space, as well as STI. We were thrilled to have the opportunity to present N2ORTH and truly enjoyed connecting with so many of our colleagues and friends. We look forward to seeing you all again in a year at the latest! You can also listen to the Deutschlandfunk feature on the conference here: https://buff.ly/3R3OZxQ Special thanks to Alexander Hoth (https://buff.ly/3X2BulZ) for beautifully capturing the event with his photography.

The NaNO V1 Engine was the first solid rocket motor we developed. This video shows it lighting up in October of 2022. But why would we publish this two years later?! We’re happy to announce an exciting partnership between HyEnD and Space Team Aachen building up to STA’s highly anticipated launch of their hybrid rocket STAHR in October 2024 as part of the DLR STERN program. HyEnD will be helping with the manufacturing of the IF-1 hybrid engine’s lightweight CFRP casing using their self-built winding machine. After two successful hot-fire tests of IF-1 with the CFRP casing, STA has decided to manufacture all their engines with a CFRP casing and even another 3 will be wound this week at the HyEnD facility in Stuttgart. This opens up a great opportunity for two teams of aspiring rocket engineers to work together, exchange knowledge, and help each other reach new heights (literally!). ——————————————— Song: Rameses B & Veela - Never Knew Me [NCS Release] Music provided by NoCopyrightSounds Free Download/Stream: http://ncs.io/NKM Watch: https://buff.ly/4bqAIDs

HyImpulse has now completed all technical preparations for the rocket launch, including a test countdown. The wind situation has also improved slightly. However, there is still some final preparatory work to be resolved with the launch site operator Southern Launch , so the planned launch has been postponed to May 3 (between 7:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. ACST / 00:00 and 07:30 CEST). #launchcampaign #lightthiscandle #hyimpulse
