👏 Remarkable work by our Hi-Acts Partner GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research in achieving higher power density and better ageing resistence of PEM fuel cells. #InnovationAccelerated
🚀 How can ion-tracks by swift heavy ions help to improve the performance of PEM fuel cells? This is being investigated in the current Industrielle Gemeinschaftsforschung (IGF) at GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research and Zentrum für BrennstoffzellenTechnik (ZBT): Development of innovative cathode catalyst layers for high-performance PEM fuel cells by means of template-supported galvanic deposition of nanowire carrier structures (DRAHT-KATH), supported by the DGO | Deutsche Gesellschaft für Galvano- und Oberflächentechnik e.V., funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action. In July, we held our second project meeting at the ZBT in Duisburg. 🗝️ Key challenges include achieving higher power density and better ageing resistance of PEM fuel cell. Our joint approach combines GSI's expertise in ion-track technology and nanowire fabrication with ZBT's experience in developing and measuring electrochemical components. 💡 The new DRAHT-KATH design aims to enhance PEM fuel cell performance by optimising electronic, protonic, and thermal contact, and improving gas diffusion properties. Early results are promising! Many thanks to Ferdinand Magel from METAKEM GmbH for the valuable exchange, and special thanks to Edward Nürenberg and Ivan Radev from Zentrum für BrennstoffzellenTechnik (ZBT) for the impressive lab tour and meeting organisation.
