Sailing Green🌱 We’re excited to welcome the first container vessel powered by crude methanol at our HHLA TK Estonia terminal: The Eco Maestro from X-Press Feeders sails on the Green Finland X-PRESS (GFX) route, starting its journey from Rotterdam, passing through Antwerp, Kotka, Helsinki (Vuosaari) and finally docking at our HHLA TK Estonia terminal in the Port of Muuga before heading back to Rotterdam. The Eco Maestro is refuelled with green methanol, a renewable fuel that produces up to 65 percent less greenhouse gases than conventional marine fuel. Green methanol is conventionally produced either from biomass or from captured CO2 emissions. We're excited to handle vessels like the Eco Maestro that are leading the way in sustainable innovation. #Meet Marek 👋🏻 Marek is a train driver at our rail subsidiary METRANS Group in Dunajska Streda, Slovakia, with a huge passion for his profession! 🎤 Marek, please share some insights with us: What happens before a locomotive kicks into gear? 💬 Before I get on the locomotive I inspect it from the outside and the inside. Then I check the Repair Book, where we write down the locomotive's defects. Only then do I put the locomotive into operation. Our modern locomotives are computer-controlled and have their own built-in diagnostic system, based on which I can diagnose the functionality of individual systems. If everything is in order, I can connect the locomotive to the train. Before the train leaves, I need to test the braking system and check the train documentation. I would also like to mention the large team of people involved in preparing the train for the journey. From the shunters, crane operators, sub-cranes, carriage drivers and the dispatching apparatus. Without them it would not be possible. 🎤 Speaking of operations, how many containers fit a train? Quite a lot of boxes, depending on their size. We can load up to 96 standard 20-foot containers per train in Dunajská Streda. 🎤 Do you also work at night? 💬 In Dunajska Streda we have round-the-clock operation. We even drive more at night than during the day. There aren't as many passenger trains running then, which restricts us, and that's why it's our time. For night shifts, I find the most important thing is to rest before boarding. Even a small amount of fatigue can do a lot of damage. 🎤 Last but not least: What do you enjoy most about your job? 💬 The work of a train driver is more than just a job. It involves a certain amount of enthusiasm. What do I love most? When the work is done well! #Meet Sascha 👋🏻 Sascha works as a craftsman on the quayside equipment team at our climate-neutral* Container Terminal Altenwerder in Hamburg. Together with his team, he maintains and repairs the equipment that is being used here. His workplace is around 50 metres above the ground. In good weather, he can see Hamburg’s TV tower from the jib of each of the 14 container gantry cranes he works on. In all weathers, he climbs to the electrical control room, the "brain" of the container gantry crane to check status and error messages that the servers and monitors display. In his highly specialised work, he often operates mechanically and increasingly electrically. In order to do so, he receives continuous training. In addition to his own work, Sascha also accompanies external companies for example, when they adjust the track of a trolley or carry out welding work. Before Sascha joined us at HHLA in 2004, he had never worked with computers. 📸 Throwback to an insightful event: Last week, the General Assembly of our Clean Port & Logistics hydrogen innovation cluster took place in Hamburg. Together with partners across different branches, we at HHLA work on exploring the integration of hydrogen-powered equipment in port logistics. We shared findings and innovative concepts, engaged in discussions about ongoing activities and reflected on the progress made, such as the opening of the test field for hydrogen-powered port operations at our Container Terminal Tollerort in Hamburg.
