🎉Taking another big step toward a more sustainable future: We at HHLA are joining the initiative for environmentally friendly shipping. At the Hamburg Sustainability Conference 2024, our CEO Angela Titzrath signed the joint "Hamburg Declaration on the Decarbonisation of Global Shipping," reaffirming our commitment to advancing climate-friendly transport and logistics solutions across our entire logistics network. This initiative aligns with global climate targets, including the 1.5-degree goal, and marks an important milestone for the maritime industry. In line with this, we at HHLA aim to reduce our CO₂ emissions by at least 50% by 2030 and achieve climate-neutral production by 2040. We’re already making significant progress, having reduced CO₂ emissions by 40% by the end of 2023, all while driving sustainable practices across our logistics network, from quayside to hinterland. The Hamburg Sustainability Conference brings together around 1,600 participants from over 100 countries to tackle global challenges, from hydrogen supply chains to fair battery production. Since 2023, we've been testing automated horizontal transport at HHLA TK Estonia in collaboration with FERNRIDE, and the project has so far provided valuable insights into improving terminal operations. We began last year with an on-site pilot project, deploying the first terminal tractor in a validation phase. Later, we successfully commissioned and integrated two more autonomous terminal tractors into live operations. To ensure reliability and performance, FERNRIDE uses a human-assisted autonomy approach with remote operators overseeing the tractors and assisting if needed. Our key learnings so far: 🔵 The human-assisted approach to autonomy is reliable and can be integrated into daily operations 🔵 Terminal Operating System integration is critical for success 🔵 Safety, flexibility, and predictability remain stable 🔵 Initial concerns about additional workload for teams in the testing period did not materialise 🚀 Many thanks to all the colleagues involved at both FERNRIDE and HHLA. Roland Spedition, one of Austria’s largest owner-led providers of climate-friendly hinterland transport, became part of the HHLA family earlier this year when we acquired a majority share. This partnership strengthens our ability to deliver seamless, sustainable logistics solutions across our expansive European network, which includes major seaport terminals in Hamburg, Tallinn, Trieste, and Odessa, along with extensive intermodal connections and inland terminals. Take a peek into one of our container workshops 👀 More than 14.000 containers were cleaned, maintained, and repaired in the workshops of our rail subsidiary METRANS Group in Budapest and Dunajská Streda last year. The large shipping companies are constantly bringing in damaged containers. On site, around 50 colleagues ensure that they are ready for use again as quickly as possible. The main tasks include locksmith works such as welding, cutting and heating metal parts or carpentry work such as the replacement of wooden floors in containers. Moreover, containers are cleaned and repainted. In addition to the repair of regular containers, our colleagues also take care of reefer containers as well as the installation of flexitanks and liners. #HHLA #METRANS #rail #train #container

Booking websites already make our lives easier in many areas, but did you know that they can help to make transport more environmentally friendly? 🌱 Especially when they facilitate intermodal transport. Our tech start-up modility has developed a neutral marketplace for transporting goods by rail in Europe. The platform provides a seamless solution for operators to market their rail transport capacities, while making it easy for forwarders to find and book them. For every search request, the modility system displays a list of different transport options along with the amount of CO2 savings they can achieve in comparison to heavy goods vehicles. Since the platform went live, the CO2 savings from all rail transports booked via modility equate to the amount that would be captured by 172 hectares of forest per year. To shape an even greener future for logistics, the marketplace is bound to integrate more environmentally friendly carriers such as inland waterway shipping and ferries into short sea shipping. #HHLA #sustainability #logistics

Great news from Trieste 🎉 A new Grimaldi service has just launched at our multipurpose terminal HHLA PLT Italy, our key logistics hub in the Adriatic. The service features two weekly calls and connects Ambarli (Turkey) to HHLA PLT Italy. A significant achievement not just for Grimaldi, but also for our terminal, which plays an important role in HHLA’s European logistics network. As part of the service, we welcome two next-generation ultra-large RoRo vessels, which incorporate eco-friendly technology and enhanced cargo capacity, reinforcing both sustainability and efficiency. The new service opens exciting opportunities for our terminal and for the Port of Trieste, potentially paving the way for new rail connections and greater trade volumes. Meet Zoltán 👋🏻 Zoltán works as a repairman at our rail subsidiary METRANS Group. Since mid-2014 he is employed at the wagon repair shop at our railway terminal in Dunajská Streda, Slovakia. So he will soon be celebrating his tenth anniversary with us. Zoltán chose to work with us because METRANS has a strong position on the market and offers reliable working conditions. His main job is to inspect and repair railway wagons, which includes remeasuring and lubricating the wagons, completing measurement reports, replacing damaged components, and diagnosing the wagons' air brakes. To secure the safety of rail transport, his work requires precision and responsibility. Zoltán enjoys working in a small team. Even though he has been working in this position for almost 10 years, he always experiences something new, whether it is a new type of wagon, or a problem that occurs for the first time and that needs to be solved. #HHLA #METRANS #logistics #team
