The programme is piloted through training/mentoring organisations for the widely recognised, contextualised and validated DSE course material. 𝐄𝐧𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐋𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐚𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐌𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐰𝐢 🛠️🇲🇼 🛠️ An integrated capacity-building training for 141 labour inspectors across all 28 districts of Malawi was successfully completed recently. This initiative, organised by the EU-funded 𝒁𝒂𝒏𝒕𝒄𝒉𝒊𝒕𝒐 𝑺𝒌𝒊𝒍𝒍𝒔 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝑱𝒐𝒃𝒔 Programme and the Ministry of Labour, aimed to enhance efficiencies, skills, and competencies in labour administration throughout the country. The training, held under the theme 𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒎𝒐𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒆𝒇𝒇𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒆 𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒈𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝒍𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒊𝒏𝒔𝒑𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒂𝒕𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝒅𝒆𝒄𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒋𝒐𝒃𝒔, targeted labour inspectors from the southern, central, and northern regions of Malawi. The goal was to modernise labour inspections in line with evolving work conditions by adopting an integrated labour inspection approach, combining general labour inspection with occupational safety and health inspection, to ensure more sustainable & cost-effective practices.✨ Labour inspection plays a crucial role in enforcing labour standards and promoting decent work, which is vital for sustainable economic development. Malawi's recent ratification of key ILO conventions underscores the government's commitment to creating decent jobs, necessitating a strengthened labour inspectorate to ensure compliance with labour laws & standards.✨ This capacity-building training equipped labour inspectors with the necessary knowledge, skills, and competencies to effectively promote compliance with labour standards across all workplaces, including MSMEs. 𝐄𝐔 𝐄𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐎𝐮𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 📚 𝐂𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐎𝐧𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐫, 𝐎𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐞𝐱𝐭 ✨ The first phase of the 𝘌𝘜 𝘌𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘖𝘶𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘫𝘦𝘤𝘵 𝘪𝘯 𝘕𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘩 𝘈𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢, funded by the European Union European External Action Service and overseen by the European Union Delegation to the United States, ran from 2022 to 2024. The project, implemented by GOPA Worldwide Consultants in partnership with GOPA PACE, the German Marshall Fund of the United States, and Working in Support of Education (W!se), successfully delivered eight key activities, despite early challenges and delays. These activities included the Euro Challenge and Schuman Challenge Competitions, the EU-US Young Leaders Seminar, and EU study visits for U.S. Gilman Scholars, among others. ✨Throughout the three years, the consortium developed strong partnerships with organisations like the U.S. Department of State, the Fulbright Commission in Belgium, and U.S. Jean-Monnet Centres for Excellence. 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐎𝐜𝐜𝐮𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐲 & 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐢𝐧 𝐌𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐰𝐢: In collaboration with the Ministry of Labour and the EU Delegation to Malawi, our team recently organised the first National Conference on Occupational Safety & Health (OSH).🇲🇼♂️🛠️♀️ The event, themed 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘮𝘰𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘖𝘤𝘤𝘶𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘚𝘢𝘧𝘦𝘵𝘺 & 𝘏𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘵𝘩: 𝘛𝘰𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘴 𝘝𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘡𝘦𝘳𝘰, aligned with the global Vision Zero approach to prevent occupational accidents & diseases. The conference aimed to foster the achievement of decent work conditions in Malawi and brought together delegates from government ministries, departments, agencies, the private sector, employer and employee representative bodies, MSMEs, and academia to share insights and develop consensus-based strategies to address OSH challenges in Malawi.   ✨The EU Head of Cooperation emphasised the EU's commitment in implementing comprehensive strategies and policies and supporting partner countries in the decent jobs agenda through interventions such as the 𝘡𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘵𝘰-𝘚𝘬𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘑𝘰𝘣𝘴 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘮𝘮𝘦. ✨At the opening address, Malawi’s Director of Administration in the Ministry of Labour confirmed the Ministry's commitment to prioritising OSH in the workplace and recognised the 𝘡𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘵𝘰-𝘚𝘬𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘑𝘰𝘣𝘴 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘮𝘮𝘦 for its financial and technical support.
