GOTS is the world’s leading textile processing standard for organic fibres, including social & ecological criteria.

Info

The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the worldwide leading textile processing standard for organic fibres, including ecological and social criteria, backed up by independent certification for the entire textile supply chain. GOTS covers the entire post-harvest processing (including spinning, knitting, weaving, dyeing and manufacturing) of apparel and home textiles made with certified organic fibre (such as organic cotton and organic wool), and includes both environmental and social criteria. Key provisions include a ban on the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), highly hazardous chemicals (such as azo dyes and formaldehyde), and child labour, while requiring strong social compliance management systems and strict waste-water treatment practices. GOTS was developed by leading international standard setters - Organic Trade Association (U.S.), Japan Organic Cotton Association, International Association Natural Textile Industry (Germany), and Soil Association (UK) to define globally-recognised requirements that ensure the organic status of textiles, from field to finished product. GOTS is a non-profit organisation which is self-financed. For more information please visit our website: www.global.standard.org.

Exciting News from Global Standard! 🌿    We're thrilled to announce that Global Standard is in the developmental stages of creating a groundbreaking new standard to extend GOTS benefits to a wider range of sustainable fibres.    This new initiative will build on GOTS' 20-year legacy of setting high environmental, social and ethical criteria, empowering the industry to adopt sustainable practices along the entire textile value chain.     Our new standard will leverage the powerful tools already established by Global Standard for GOTS, including the Global Fibre Registry and Global Trace-Base. In addition, the standard will assist companies in demonstrating their adherence to supply chain regulations and beyond.     Once our committees agree on the first draft, the standard will enter a public consultation procedure as per ISEAL requirements. We are confident that the process will advance as agilely as the industry has come to expect from GOTS.      Stay tuned as we shape and synergise this new standard with GOTS principles and drive positive change in the textile world!   Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/durXzWjH •  •  •  •  #nogreenwashing  #sayyestogots  #2024  #field  #fashion  #fromfieldtofashion  #Sustainability   #GOTS   #TextileIndustry   #GlobalStandard   #SustainableFibres   #EthicalFashion   #EnvironmentalImpact  has context menu

As a self-funded non-profit organisation, all income is used to reach our vision and mission. GOTS is independent of outside economic interests. GOTS receives annual fees from each certified facility, set at only €150. As a non-profit, we apply for public funding for larger projects.   Being a non-profit certification standard for textiles. GOTS is independent and, therefore, not influenced by brands, retailers, suppliers etc.   This stresses how GOTS positions itself as voluntary, which does not aim at maximizing profits, but at enhancing people’s lives along supply chains and the environmental state of our planet. We are a dynamic standard and foster constant progress towards better textile processing methods – so we collaborate with international stakeholders, including environmental organisations, the textile and apparel industry, chemical suppliers, organic farmers and workers' rights groups and labour unions.

GOTS Representative in Africa, Muktar Dodo, had the chance to be part of an amazing GOTS Awareness workshop by GIZ in Ghana! The German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) organised a GOTS Awareness workshop for garment factories in Ghana. It was a three-day activity that included two days of factory visits and one day of the workshop. The factories aim to become more competitive in the global market, especially in the EU, where new supply chain laws are coming into effect. Muktar provided a comprehensive overview of GOTS and its significance in the textile processing industry. GOTS receives top sustainability scores from the German government! In May, the German government released the new “Guidelines for sustainable textile procurement by the Federal Administration” that strengthen responsible procurement by defining rigorous social and environmental criteria. The guidelines refer to internationally recognised standards, such as GOTS, as a preferred means to prove compliance with the required social and environmental criteria. The document scores sustainability performance of known labels, highlighting GOTS as a top standard for organic textiles. We are especially proud of such strong results in sustainability ranking, that award GOTS’s continuous efforts in developing a more sustainable and ethical textile industry. The document, binding on federal institutions, is also intended for use by states, municipalities and other procurement actors, providing a non-mandatory, yet practical tool for improving procurement practices. The guidelines’ definition of sustainability encompasses environmental and social requirements to be mandatorily met all along textile production: raw materials extraction, manufacturing and product sale. Social criteria aim to protect the health and safety of employees in fibre production, with strong focus on eradication of child and forced labour. Additionally, the guidelines firmly foster the use of cotton from controlled organic cultivation. In textile processing, the guidelines require several measures to tackle negative impacts on human rights and support environmentally friendly practices for natural resources consumption. The end product considerations ban the use of harmful chemicals.
