Science Diplomacy is a key element in international cooperation dealing with the global challenges of 21st Century – be it climate change, global health crises, growing nationalism set against multilateral cooperation, war, migration, or security. By establishing international networks, by facilitating communication or by providing scientific advice for decision-making in foreign policy, science diplomacy contributes to finding solutions. Academic freedom is a major factor in these international settings – and ensuring it in times of conflicts and political tensions is challenging. With our guests, we will, among other aspects, talk about 🔴 the role and actual organization of science diplomacy in international academic cooperations and foreign policy 🔴 the possibilities that science diplomacy offers for fostering academic freedom 🔴 the competences necessary for successful science diplomacy 🎤 The panel discussion will feature Dr. Sandra Dahlke (Max Weber Network Eastern Europe), Katrin Kinzelbach (Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nürnberg), and Kristin Shi-Kupfer (Trier University),  hosted by Anja Wehler-Schoeck (Verlag Der Tagesspiegel) 🎤 Afterwards, we invite you to exchange ideas in lounge corners with the panel guests and more experts. We are delighted to introduce Dr. Anke Bösel, who will be joining us as Head of Programs/Deputy Director starting on October 1! With a decade of experience as Co-Director of Studienförderwerk Klaus Murmann at Stiftung der Deutschen Wirtschaft (sdw) gGmbH, Anke brings a wealth of expertise to our organization. Her academic background spans American Studies, Political Science, and Linguistics, and she is an alumna of Tübingen University. During her studies, she spent a year at Washington University in St. Louis, MO, supported by a DAAD Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst scholarship. Anke’s career has included teaching at prestigious institutions like Yale University and Köln University. She then transitioned to Berlin, focusing on scholarships for high-potential university students. Her expertise encompasses educational programs, talent and alumni management, fundraising, organization development, and leadership. We are incredibly fortunate to have Anke join the Fulbright community and are confident that her insights and leadership will help drive our mission forward. Our executive director, Hakan Tosuner, had the pleasure of engaging in a conversation with the new Chargé d'Affaires Alan Meltzer during the Welcome Reception at the U.S. Embassy earlier this week. They discussed the importance of transatlantic relations and the future of academic exchange between the U.S. and Germany. Strengthening these connections is key to promoting mutual understanding and collaboration between the two nations. They also emphasized the importance of focusing on underrepresented groups, ensuring that opportunities for academic exchange reach a broader and more diverse audience. BERLIN CAPITAL PROGRAM 2024 Recap: Fulbright feat. JOURNALISM - Event & Networking Reception in Collaboration with the German Fulbright Alumni Association 🙌🏽 🗞️ 🎥 Last Tuesday, participants of the Berlin Capital Program gathered for an insightful event and networking reception, co-hosted by the German Fulbright Alumni Association. The evening began with welcome remarks from Dr. Dr. Max Kanzow, LL.M., Chief of Staff for the Coordinator of Transatlantic Cooperation at the German Federal Foreign Office, setting the tone for the evening with a focus on the vital role of transatlantic dialogue. Attendees were treated to lightning presentations by key figures in the German media landscape, including: 🗞️ Johannes Ehrmann – author, Zeit 🎙️ Jesse George – media, cultural & public affairs expert 📸 Viktor Hübner – photojournalist 🎙️ Alexandra Schaller – FUNKE Media Group 🗞️ Rachel Stern – freelance journalist and editor The presentations touched on a variety of issues shaping journalism in Germany today, including the evolving media landscape, the role of journalists in times in challenging times. The event concluded with a networking reception, providing participants the opportunity to connect with fellow professionals and discuss the challenges and opportunities facing journalism today. This gathering was a highlight of the Berlin Capital Program, which explores how journalists are navigating the complexities of modern Europe—from the notion of memory culture in Germany to the political implications of state elections and the rise of independent journalistic organizations. Vier Monate an der Rowan University – eine unvergessliche Fulbright-Erfahrung! Unsere Fulbrighterin Katharina Sundermann hat ihre Zeit in Glassboro, New Jersey, in vollen Zügen genossen. Zusätzlich zu ihrem akademischen Aufenthalt in den USA verbrachte sie einen weiteren Monat mit Reisen und entdeckte atemberaubende Orte wie Hawaii, Alaska, New York und die Niagara-Fälle. Die Vielfalt und Größe der USA beeindruckte Katharina. Trotz aller Herausforderungen und Kulturschocks war der kulturelle Austausch sehr bereichernd, und sie fand eine wundervolle Gruppe, mit der sie unvergessliche Momente teilte. Announcing the next round of the Mentoring Program for US Grantees! The Mentoring Program of the German Fulbright Alumni e.V. will take place again this year. The idea of the program is that Fulbright alumni in Germany support the US grantees during their stay as mentors, and give them an insight into everyday life in Germany. In addition to building friendships overseas and refreshing their English skills, mentors can also help foster the American-German exchange by this program. The program begins with a kick-off event on October 6th, 17:00. Participants must register in advance so that they can be matched with their grantee. Registration takes place via the website of the Fulbright Alumni Association and is open until September 28, 23:59. The link was emailed a few days ago. BERLIN CAPITAL PROGRAM 2024 Kicks Off! 🎥 📰 #aboutyesterday 🍂 Exploring Berlin's powerful memory sites of WWII and the GDR with Dagmar Hovestadt as part of this year’s Berlin Capital Program seminar. A profound journey into 20th-century history and memory culture. The Berlin Capital Program (BCP) familiarizes journalists from different regions of the US with German perspectives on topics ranging from politics and culture to the economy and environment. This week, our participants traveled to Berlin for the one-week group program to engage with Germans from different walks of life, make a “lived” connection with the history, literature and films they know, sift through the Germany they’ve heard and read about yet now witness with their own eyes – and use their journalistic skills to bring a more nuanced truth to their colleagues and audience back in the US.
