Titled 신·경(神經) – ‘Nerve or Divine Pathway’, the inaugural edition of Frieze LIVE at Frieze Seoul 2024 explores the potential of poetry as an impetus for performance art. Reflecting our current socio-political landscape, where radical politics often exploit or diminish the power of language, these performances emphasize the transformative power of poetic speech through the human body itself, suggesting new possibilities for communication. The title is a play on words referencing the layered meanings in traditional Chinese characters 신·경(神經), which can be translated as ‘nerve’ or ‘divine pathway’. This mirrors the artistic strategies used in the performances, which seek to expand syntax while directly engaging our senses, to produce fresh inspiration (영감:靈感). THE SEPTEMBER ISSUE IS OUT NOW What does great art demand from great writing, and how does great writing shape great art? The new issue of frieze traces the dialogue between artists and writers, and how they influence and relate to one another. Our columns section is themed on Wordplay, from a zine on the ABCs of drag ballroom culture to Kevin Killian’s Amazon reviews. In the features section, assistant editor Sean Burns profiles Marlene Dumas ahead of her show at Frith Street Gallery; an extensive oral history recounts Bidoun, a magazine offering perspectives in and of the Middle East and the Arab Diaspora; Glenn Ligon speaks with senior editor Terence Trouillot about the parallels in his practice; Erika Balsom documents her visit to Michael Heizer’s City (1970–2022); and an essay by Juliet Jacques addresses labour conditions and class relations in art practice. Nengi Omuku’s romantic and impressionistic paintings bloom with references to the natural world. Set in spectacular landscapes, they are testament to the imaginative power of reverie and empathy. By using sanyan — a handspun Yoruba fabric — Omuku grounds the otherworldly in local tradition. The body of work is a ‘collective response to the uncertainty and internal turmoil that have arisen as a result of the political instability in Nigeria and globally.’ Nominated by artist Yinka Shonibare CBE, Omuku’s works will be presented by Pippy Holdsworth Gallery and Kasmin as part of the acclaimed curated section ‘Artist-to-Artist’ at Frieze London 2024. The section debuts six solo presentations chosen by world-renowned artists. Read more at the link: https://brnw.ch/21wM0mK Global lead partner — Deutsche Bank #FriezeLondon

Bringing together international artists at the forefront of ceramics and exploring diasporic and indigenous histories, our newest themed section, ‘Smoke’, debuts at Frieze London 2024. Curated by Pablo José Ramírez (Curator, Hammer Museum, Los Angeles), the featured artists’ practices involve pre-colonial traditions to use clay in expanded forms – presenting ceramics as one of the most impactful aesthetic forms in contemporary art: ‘to think about ceramics, it’s tangible. It’s an object. It’s a vessel. But it is also embedded with histories that you cannot just perceive by looking.’ Read more: https://lnkd.in/e4SGQSjK Special thanks to Murmurs for assistance with video production.
