Yesterday, we convened our first Fresenius Kabi meeting dedicated to European National Nutrition Associations during the ESPEN congress, where Fresenius Kabi participates alongside colleagues from across Europe and beyond. Our teams discussed the priorities of each country and highlighted significant topics that should be addressed at the European level. It is crucial that we unify our efforts to advocate for clinical nutrition care for patients suffering from malnutrition in Europe. Clinical nutrition should not be viewed as a mere expense but as a cost-saving measure for healthcare systems, thanks to its benefits for patients. Ist ein nationales Bevorratungslager für Arzneimittel der richtige Ansatz um die #Arzneimittelversorgung in Österreich nachhaltig zu verbessern? Mit dieser Frage beschäftigen sich derzeit zahlreiche Expert:innen aus Wirtschaft und Politik. So auch unser Team von Fresenius Kabi Austria. Warum? Die im Vorfeld viel und kritisch diskutierte Verordnung für die Bevorratung von Arzneimitteln wurde vor einigen Tagen von Bundesminister Johannes Rauch erlassen. Als zentraler Player und Partner im österreichischen #Gesundheitswesen sind wir bestrebt, die Versorgung von kritisch und chronisch kranken Patient:innen zu gewährleisten. Daher begrüßen und unterstützen wir jegliche Maßnahme, die darauf abzielt, die Versorgung mit Arzneimitteln zu verbessern. Denn wir wissen sehr gut, was es bedeutet die #Lieferketten und #Versorgungssicherheit aufrecht zu erhalten. Die gesetzlich verordnete #Arzneimittelbevorratung wird jedoch die Versorgung nicht verbessern, sondern die Situation leider weiter verschärfen. Die #Generika & #Biosimilar-Industrie produziert bereits an ihrer Kapazitätsgrenze. Produktionsvolumen können nicht von heute auf morgen erhöht werden. Außerdem führt eine gesetzliche Bevorratung in einzelnen Ländern dazu, dass möglicherweise Patient:innen in anderen Ländern nicht versorgt werden können. Aus Sicht von Fresenius Kabi Austria kann nur eine gesamthafte, europäische #Strategie der zielführende Weg sein, um eine lokale Arzneimittelproduktion und damit die Verfügbarkeit von Arzneimitteln nachhaltig zu sichern. I was honored to speak at the 30th anniversary of Medicines for Europe, held at the Annual Conference in Dublin under the theme "Breaking Barriers: Building the Off-Patent Medicines Sector of the Future." Fresenius Kabi has been a proud member of Medicines for Europe for over a decade, sharing its mission to improve health and wellbeing of people by providing better access to high-quality medicines. The members’ portfolios cover 80% of therapy areas and supplies 70% of all medicines in Europe, and together we are deeply committed to adding to the sustainability of Europe’s healthcare systems for future generations. During my panel, I addressed a critical challenge our industry faces: the need to balance the increasing demand for medicines with the pressure of declining prices. This contradiction needs resolution. Making pharmaceutical production in Europe more flexible and attractive requires action to strengthen supply chains and enable better solutions to help more patients. We are at a crossroad with the need for policy makers to identify the right framework conditions which will strengthen the industry while considering the interlinkages which exist across the individual components of the pharmaceutical industry, i.e., R&D, manufacturing, and commercialization. Additionally, it is important to consider that our industry is global in nature hence resource allocation decisions are taken considering the relative attractiveness of the different continents and countries. I also emphasized the transformative potential of digitalization and data processing. AI will accelerate the future of our industry. It will give health care professionals more time to focus on patient care and help us develop better medicines faster and more affordably.
