Specialist knowledge is important. But in which areas should freelancers undergo further training in the medium or long term? Stephanie Verch has a clear opinion on this. The freelance consultant for digital transformation and communication is certain that AI can be a major knowledge gap and separates the wheat from the chaff. Freelancers who don't get to grips with the possibilities of artificial intelligence are letting others take the lead. The respondents to the Freelancer Survey 2024 also see it this way. When asked which areas freelancers should gain knowledge in the near future, 75% said AI. Cloud solutions and IT security are also among the front runners. The fact is: if you want to be successful in freelancing, you have to continue your education - even outside of your specialization. More insights in our newest study - link in the comments. Project acquisition is the biggest problem freelancers face. Especially for newcomers, acquiring their first clients and retaining them in the long term can be a challenge. They should build networks, use online platforms to approach potential clients, and maintain long-term relationships with existing clients. We recommend using platforms that specialize in freelance assignments - just like ours. The second challenge freelancers cited in the Freelancer Study 2024 is fluctuating income. Money can be a serious challenge and easily cause stress. Building up a financial buffer, for example, can help cushion the effects of order slumps. Experienced freelancers recommend having around €20,000 set aside before starting freelancing. Even seasoned freelancers should maintain this minimum amount. False self-employment ranks third and can be a significant risk. To avoid this situation, freelancers should use clear contracts and ensure that they serve multiple clients and are not dependent on a single one. Want to know which other challenges freelancers deal with? Check out our full report (link in the comments). How do you deal with the problems of freelancing? Early bird or night owl? And what is a chronotype? A chronotype refers to a person's individual preference and tendency in relation to their sleep-wake cycle. It describes whether someone is more of a morning or a night person and how this preference affects their daily routine and performance. Even if it is not always possible to choose your own working hours, knowing your chronotype can help you optimize your productivity. If you are particularly productive in the morning, you can schedule tasks that require a lot of concentration for this time. Night owls prefer to work in the evening because they are generally less disturbed and can stay on task longer without distraction. Hans Rusinek also knows freelancers who do not hold meetings in the mornings for this reason. He conducts research into New Work and the transformation of companies and explains more about this topic in the Freelancer Study 2024 (link in the comments). Which chronotype are you? Morning person or night owl? The Leibniz Institute for Work Research at TU Dortmund University offers a test to find it out! Are projects more than just work for you? The respondents to the Freelancer Study 2024 clearly say yes. Our experts, Peter Balog and Jon Younger, also note that work is no longer just work - especially for younger generations. The number one value that freelancers expect from the corporate culture of their project providers is sustainability. In second place is equal pay: our newest study shows that the gender pay gap in freelancing is narrowing. Incentives, whether material or financial, are in last place. On the other hand, by far the most common reason for freelancers to reject projects is a low hourly rate. You can find the link to our full report in the comments. How do you see it? How many projects should I work on? Self-employed people, especially those just starting out with freelancing, tend to overload themselves with projects and don't sort out much. Hans Rusinek, who conducts research into New Work, has a clear opinion on how many projects a freelancer should take on: quality over quantity. "In order to build up expert status, you have to set limits - and these start with the selection of projects." If you want to learn more about how to build up expert status, you can read through our latest study (link in the comments). How do you see it? Have you ever overloaded yourself with projects, or is project acquisition still a problem?
