PROJECT SPEED PROMOTES TRANSFER OF RESEARCH KNOWLEDGE INTO APPLICATION With the joint project SpeeD, the Ernst-Abbe-Hochschule Jena, the SpectroNet c/o Technologie- und Innovationspark Jena GmbH innovation cluster, and Fraunhofer IOF are set to strengthen the transfer of expert knowledge and research into real-world applications. As one of only 20 innovation communities in the DATIpilot funding line of the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung, our goal is to integrate spectral detections into socially relevant applications. To achieve this, the project will establish a cross-industry platform for technology testing and the #exchange of experience. Fraunhofer IOF is contributing its expertise in miniaturized spectral and spectral imaging sensor systems, which are compact and robust, making them ideal for adaptation and optimization with minimal development effort. Yesterday, Dr. Anna Christmann, member of the Federal Parliament's Committee on Education, Research and Technology Assessment, visited Jena to learn more about this project. During her visit, our researchers had the opportunity to demonstrate current developments and systems, showcasing the #future of (spectral) research and technology. HYPERSPACE PROJECT ACHIEVES FIRST MILESTONES On the path to creating an intercontinental network for #quantum key communication, the HyperSpace project consortium has reached significant milestones since the project's launch in October 2022. With this, the consortium has successfully completed the first half of the project. The published research results #highlight new developments and implementation options for quantum key distribution (QKD), which will now be tested in the field. Read more about the new project developments here: https://lnkd.in/eDXJSq3g The HyperSpace project, coordinated at Fraunhofer IOF, aims to advance the vision of a global #network for virtually tap-proof #quantumcommunication. It is funded by the European Commission and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).

PROTECTING CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE WITH THE HELP OF QUANTA Gas control systems, power lines, and communication systems are essential and therefore part of our critical infrastructure. In the digital age, it's not only natural forces that pose an acute threat to the #security of these networks, but also, and especially, #cyberattacks. The new research project #MANTIS, that is coordinated by Fraunhofer IOF, aims to make these networks more robust against such attacks using modern #quantumtechnology. Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) uses the principles of quantum physics to create secure communication channels. MANTIS wants to bring this QKD to the next level: The project aims to develop a measurement-device-independent and chip-based QKD, so-called MDI-QKD. In addition to our institute, the partners include the Fraunhofer IIS /EAS, Fraunhofer-Institut für Angewandte Informationstechnik FIT , Universität Münster and the company PSI Software SE. We look forward to working together on this important project! You can find out more about the MANTIS project and the advantages of the new technology compared to conventional QKD systems here 👉 https://lnkd.in/dKVJigUG

AWARD-WINNING RESEARCH INTO 2D MATERIALS A team of researchers from Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena and Fraunhofer IOF consisting of Prof. Andrey Turchanin, Dr. Antony George, Dr. Christof Neumann and Dr. Falk Eilenberger (Fraunhofer IOF) have been awarded the Thüringer Forschungspreis (Thuringian Research Prize) for their research into so-called 2D materials. These 2D materials have unique properties and are therefore suitable for a range of promising applications, e.g. in the field of secure data transmission or in lighting systems. This is because the materials are efficient mediators between electricity and light and can act as direct semiconductors. The newly developed manufacturing process also makes it possible to integrate these nanomaterials into optical fibers or photonic chips so that they can not only conduct light, but also generate, change or detect it. For the first time electronic, photonic and optoelectronic components that are extremely small and powerful at the same time can be produced with the innovative process. For this scientific innovation, the researchers were awarded the Thuringian Research Prize (Thüringer Ministerium für Wirtschaft, Wissenschaft & Digitale Gesellschaft) on June 18. Our warmest congratulations to the entire team. ✨ You can read more about the diverse applications of the materials and the collaboration between the Jena researchers here 👉 https://lnkd.in/euXF3ftH #Forschungspreis #innovation
