Info
The Ferdinand-Braun-Institut, Leibniz-Institut für Höchstfrequenztechnik (FBH) is an application-oriented research institute in the fields of high-frequency electronics, photonics, and quantum physics. It researches and realizes electronic and optical components, modules, and systems based on compound semiconductors. These devices are key enablers that address the needs of today’s society in fields like communications, energy, health, and mobility. Specifically, FBH develops light sources from the visible to the ultra-violet spectral range: high-power diode lasers with excellent beam quality, UV light sources and hybrid laser modules. Applications range from medical technology, high-precision metrology and sensors to optical communications in space and integrated quantum technology. In the field of microwaves, FBH develops high-efficiency multi-functional power amplifiers and millimeter wave frontends targeting energy-efficient mobile communications, industrial sensing and imaging as well as car safety systems. In addition, compact atmospheric microwave plasma sources operating with economic low-voltage drivers and laser drivers are fabricated for use in a variety of applications. The FBH is a center of competence for III-V compound semiconductors covering the full range of capabilities, from design through fabrication to device characterization. Within Research Fab Microelectronics Germany (Forschungsfabrik Mikroelektronik Deutschland), FBH joined forces with 12 other German research institutes, thus offering the complete micro and nanoelectronics value chain as a one-stop-shop. The institute is a member of the Leibniz Association.

🔧 We’re happy to share a significant advancement at FBH: our 8” wafer process line has undergone a major upgrade, enhancing the chip handling capabilities within our mounting and assembly department. This upgrade marks an important step towards improving efficiency and precision in our production processes. The enhancement includes advanced equipment such as an upgraded fully-automatic die-bonder, now equipped to handle 6” and 8” dicing frames. Coupled with a newly acquired manual pick-and-flip machine, which ensures safe and precise chip handling, we are now better equipped to handle a variety of chip sizes and materials, including sensitive components like dust-sensitive materials. This upgrade sets the stage for more intricate and reliable chip assembly processes, supporting our commitment to delivering high-quality standards. 🚀 Find out more – link in the comments! #ChipHandling #AdvancedManufacturing #TechnologyInnovation

🚀 First milestone reached! 🚀 We’ve demonstrated a #farUVC #LED that emits ultra-short 227 nm photons with an optical power of over 0.2 mW during 500 hours of operation. This achievement is crucial for our “Multi-wavelength UV-LED module for gas sensing” project, co-financed by the #EuropeanUnion / EU Funds and Investitionsbank Berlin (IBB). We accomplished this through optimizations in the semiconductor structure and chip design. Find out more about the project: https://fbhlink.de/8sj7

Our latest research leverages AI to improve the design of custom lasers for applications such as quantum sensing. We implement intelligent methods to predict the optical response of Bragg gratings within semiconductor ridge waveguides by refining simulation accuracy, utilizing AI algorithms with limited data, and constructing databases effectively. 📊🔬 Accurate simulations are crucial for database generation, and we’ve employed 3D FDTD simulations to ensure precision. To manage the computational demands, we identified AI algorithms capable of precise predictions despite limited data – with XGBoost outperforming other models in our studies. Additionally, we employed Gaussian process regression and Bayesian optimization to construct highly informative databases, further enhancing the efficiency of our methods. 📈🤖 Explore how our research contributes to the advancement of custom-made lasers! https://fbhlink.de/5wxs #Photonics #ArtificialIntelligence #QuantumSensing #LaserDesign #ScientificResearch
