The E-Waste Column no. 121 We are looking at the evolving rules around e-waste recycling in Germany today. 🌱 How is the government facilitating e-waste recycling? According to the German Ministry of Environment, there were 1.6 million tons of electrical devices in circulation in Germany in 2013 and this rose to more than 3 million tons by 2021. In line with this, the amount of e-waste in Germany is growing considerably. The German federal government therefore wants to make it easier for consumers to return their old electrical appliances. Since the summer of 2022, it has been possible to return old electrical appliances to supermarkets and grocery stores. Under the draft amendment to the German Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act (ElektroG) presented on 2 May 2024, these in-store collection points are to be marked uniformly in the future to make it easier for consumers to find them. Moreover, it will be possible to return disposable e-cigarettes everywhere where they can be purchased, which includes kiosks and petrol stations. 🌱 Where can electrical appliances be returned? Since 1 July 2022, supermarkets and grocery stores – that regularly sell electrical appliances and have a sales area of more than 800m2 – have had to take back and dispose of smaller electrical appliances (with an ≤25cm edge length) free of charge. This includes – for example – flashlights, shoes with lights, smartphones, and tablets. Stores have only been obligated to take back larger appliances (i.e. anything ˃25cm) when a corresponding new appliance is purchased at the same time. Under the draft amendment to the ElektroG, it would be possible to return even larger devices (with an ≤50cm edge length) for free without having to buy a new device. 🌱 Do consumers know what to do with their e-waste? Many German consumers fail to realize “that basically anything that flashes, makes sounds or contains a battery is an electrical device”. Many German consumers are also not aware that they can hand small electrical devices in at larger grocery stores. Therefore, improving education is key and the government plans to take steps to better inform consumers. 🌱 What safety plans are there? Going forward, the German Ministry of Environment wants to improve disposal safety and mitigate the fire risks caused by incorrectly disposed or damaged batteries. The draft law sets out that, in the future, old electrical devices collected at recycling centers may only be sorted into collection containers by trained staff – and that consumers may no longer "throw" old devices into containers themselves. There is also a new requirement that batteries from handed-in electrical devices must be removed, where possible, and then disposed of separately. The idea behind this is to reduce the risk of battery damage through mechanical compaction during collection and transport. 💡 Next week, we are looking at vape recycling in Germany – so stay tuned. #theewastecolumn #ewaste #recycling

Today is International #EWasteDay 🌍♻ On this crucial day, let's raise awareness about the growing e-waste crisis. Did you know? ⚡️ 50 million tonnes of e-waste are generated annually, but only 20% is properly recycled. 📱 80% of electronic waste ends up in landfills, wasting valuable resources like gold, silver, and copper. ♻️ Recycling 1 tonne of circuit boards produces up to 800 x more gold than mining the same amount of ore! At E-Waste World Conference & Expo 2025, we’re advancing circular solutions to reduce, recover, and renew e-waste. Let’s power tomorrow’s green tech together. #EWWE2025 #IEWD #CircularEconomy #EWasteSolutions #Reduce #Recover #Renew #GreenTech

International #EwasteDay – Only 13 days to go! ⏳ With the constant technology development, many old devices are left behind, contributing to the growing problem of e-waste. But there’s good news — you can make a difference! When your gadgets have reached the end of their life, and can’t be repaired or reused anymore, don't let them collect dust. Instead, recycle them responsibly! Not only does this free up space, but it helps reduce harmful e-waste in our environment. 👉 If you represent a company: join the activities on October 14th: any e-waste-related awareness-raising activities are welcome. Register here and become official participant, gaining visibility on the International E-Waste Day page: https://lnkd.in/dZifT6V 👉 If you are a private person: participate in the social media competition. Send us a picture of your hoarded electronics drawer and show where you handed them over for a chance to win a train ticket to travel around Europe! Find more info here: https://lnkd.in/daWVVXz7

#EWasteFrankfurt #TechnischeGase #Hydrometallurgie #Innovation #Nachhaltigkeit #Airliquid

Best industry event so far about electronics recycling and related topics. Congrats E-Waste World Conference & Expo for successfully bringing so many decision makers and influencers together! Only downside was that it was too busy so couldn’t attend everywhere I wanted 😄
Kuusakoski had a fantastic time at the E-Waste World Conference & Expo in Frankfurt, Germany! ♻️ This leading European event for electronics recycling featured over 200 exhibitors and attracted more than 3,000 attendees. As strong advocates of recycling and reuse, we were proud to be not just one of the exhibitors but also a silver sponsor. 🩶 Our smart battery sensor, developed together with Olfactomics and DOLAV Plastic Products, generated a lot of interest. The largest risk for companies handling lithium-ion batteries is fire, which also leads to high insurance costs. This new patented (pending) proactive risk management measure helps reduce this risk. The battery sensor identifies gases originating from the liquid electrolyte inside the batteries and sends an SMS alarm to take action before a fire breaks out. In addition, the wheel of sustainability in our booth served food for thought as intended. Visitors had the opportunity to spin the wheel and answer questions with a sustainability twist related to ITAD, batteries, e-waste, and metals. For correct answers, we gave out prizes from fellow Finnish brands such as IITTALA, Fazer, Lumene Group, and Riipisen Riistaherkut, showcasing classic quality products from our home country. A huge thank you to Hendrik Vedder, Tapio Kuusakoski, and Ben László for representing Kuusakoski, and kudos to everyone who visited and made this event memorable! 💡 For more information about our e-waste solutions, visit the link in the comments. #KuusakoskiRecycling #Kuusakoski #EWasteWorld2024 #Recycling #Sustainability #EWaste
