European XFEL flies the flag ... and is thus sending a visible signal for #diversity, acceptance and cosmopolitanism on the occasion of #HamburgerPrideWeek from 27 July to 4 August 2024. Over 400 organisations in #Hamburg and the surrounding area are taking part in this campaign. European #XFEL is thus reaffirming its recognition of diversity as an important part of a fair, equal and inclusive working environment. The institution signed the #DiversityCharter in 2022, joining over 4,500 German organisations and institutions. “We are emphasising and committing to creating a respectful working environment for everyone - regardless of age, ethnic origin, nationality, gender, gender identity, physical or mental abilities, religion, ideology, sexual orientation or social background,” emphasises Managing Director and Administrative Director Nicole Elleuche. In order to sustainably address and improve the desire for diversity, European XFEL offers diversity training for the workforce, among other things.
Info
The European X-ray Free Electron Laser (European XFEL) is an international X-ray research laser facility located in the German federal states of Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein. A scientific user facility, the European XFEL generates high-intensity X-ray laser pulses for researchers across the world. The European XFEL is managed by a nonprofit company, European XFEL GmbH, and is supported by 12 member states: Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

District Administrator Elfi Heesch with District President Helmuth Ahrens and Schenefeld's Mayor Christiane Küchenhof were welcomed at European XFEL by the managing directors Thomas Feurer and Nicole Elleuche. They visited the facility, the experimental hall and took a look at the progress of the Lighthouse exhibition and conference centre including the #XcoolLab, which will be officially opened in November. The new visitor centre will provide the public with unique insights into one of the world's leading #XFEL research facilities. Furthermore, in the Xcool Lab, #school #students will have the opportunity to experience #science at first hand and investigate scientific questions from #physics or molecular #biology with independent experiments.

Taylor Swift rocked European XFEL On 23 and 24 July, singer and songwriter #taylorswift gave two concerts in #Hamburg's Volksparkstadion. Researchers from the ‘WAVE’ network have recorded the vibrations that Taylor Swift triggered with her music and her #swifties with their jumping. The vibrations were recorded by European #XFEL and Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron #DESY in Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld, which is around two kilometres from Hamburg's Volksparkstadion. The song ‘Shake it off’ created the biggest buzz around 9:30 pm. WAVE is a seismic and geo-acoustic measuring network. It comprises a total of 19 kilometres of glass fibre with 19,000 sensors and extends from Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld to European XFEL in #Schenefeld. WAVE makes it possible to record ground movements at a previously unattained density over long distances. In future, WAVE will be used to record changes in the subsurface, such as the groundwater content or subsurface temperature. Experiments to measure gravitational waves are also planned as part of the ‘Quantum Universe’ Cluster of Excellence at the University of Hamburg. And here are some results. There had been some good vibrations ;-)
We are online again and also show on the second day how Hamburg swings along to Taylor Swift! Our WAVE seismic measurement network at the Bahrenfeld campus at DESY measures live the “TaylorTremors”, again! With our WAVE glass fiber (DAS) sensor network, we listen to vibrations underground with a thousand ears. On July 23rd and 24th 2024, Taylor Swift will perform at the Volksparkstadion Hamburg, just 2 km from our experiment! Today between 18:00-23:00 we share our vibration measurements with you via our Livestream! https://lnkd.in/ePjD4r7W Yesterday we could already see the seismic waves going from the Volksparkstadion to Schenefeld through the European XFEL. Each song showed a clear signature in our data. “Shake it Off” and “Love Story” were two of the strongest signals. Which song is it today? On the livestream, you will see two live visualisations - a ring of ‘rainbow blobs’ and a more classic ‘waterfall plot’ - and results from today and yesterday! For more information about what you see in the Livestream, and general information about the WAVE project, check out our website! http://wave-hamburg.eu We could not do this without the amazing WAVE team working hard to make this reality! Thanks to: Celine Hadziioannou, Oliver Gerberding, Holger Schlarb (co-coordinators); Markus Hoffmann, Erik Genthe, Wanda Vossius. Vincent Wodtke, Laura Bogner, Reinhardt Rading (the "Taylor Task Force" 😀 ) and the rest of the WAVE crew! And thanks to support by Universität Hamburg, Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron DESY, Helmut-Schmidt-Universität/Universität der Bundeswehr Hamburg, European XFEL and Helmholtz-Zentrum Potsdam - Deutsches GeoForschungsZentrum GFZ. #DAS #ScienceOutreach #SciComm #ScienceCityHamburg

Hamburg swings along to Taylor Swift! Live measurements of the “TaylorTremors” from the concerts at the Bahrenfeld campus at DESY with the WAVE seismic measurement network With our WAVE glass fiber (DAS) sensor network, we listen to vibrations underground with a thousand ears. On July 23rd and 24th 2024, Taylor Swift will perform at the Volksparkstadion Hamburg, just 2 km from our experiment! During the two concerts so tonight and tomorrow (18:00-23:00), we will share our vibration measurements with you via our Livestream! https://lnkd.in/gaEJvRTj We already knew that we are able to pick up vibrations of concerts happening in the Volksparkstadion, since we have already picked up concerts by for example Metallica in the past. Lots and lots of fans jumping and dancing at the same time will cause the ground to "swing along" a bit. “Swiftquakes?!" Don't worry, these are not real earthquakes! These are tiny vibrations! You would not feel them, and they will not cause any damage, our measurement device is really sensitive.. You've probably felt the ground shaking when a big truck passes nearby? It's the same effect, just caused by lots of happy people dancing! On the livestream, you will see two visualisations: A ring of ‘rainbow blobs’ and a more classic ‘waterfall plot’. The ‘rainbow blobs’ show the strength of the arriving signals along the fiber but filtered for different frequency bands. So the wider a specific colour band is, the stronger are the waves vibrating in that range. They also help understand from what direction the signal is coming and help us observe along what path the waves are travelling. On the horizontal axis of the ‘waterfall plot’ you see the distance along the optical fibre, whereas the vertical axis represents the time. The colours then show how strongly the vibrations ‘wiggle’ fiber. So with the time passing, we can observe where along the fiber signals are arriving first and how they change as they travel. For more information about what you see in the Livestream, and general information about the WAVE project, check out our website! http://wave-hamburg.eu We could not do this without the amazing WAVE team working hard to make this reality! European #XFEL reaches unmatched level in measurements of matter under extreme conditions Scientific journal highlights corresponding publication as “Editor’s suggestion” Researchers at European XFEL have developed an innovative method to study warm dense matter with unprecedented accuracy. This kind of matter, that exists between condensed matter and plasma #physics, can be found, for example, in #astrophysical objects or is created during inertial confinement #fusion. For the contributing scientists at the Center for Advanced Systems Understanding (#CASUS), this advancement is a great aid to their mission of lifting the analysis of warm dense matter onto a solid foundation. https://lnkd.in/dWYfxgqb #HZDR
